    Sometimes this just isn't the story you want to tell though. Sometimes you might want to just tell a story without having to deal with a particular character at all.

    I guess... But then there's the question of how much of the source material you can remove before you're doing something else entirely than HP fanfiction.

    Quite a lot more than one character. A single character missing is a pretty mild AU even if it's a major character in the original.

    I think that as long as the magical world still exists in the fic and the fic takes place in or around magical Britain then it's still HP fanfiction.

    A fic that has Harry losing his magic and moving to LA to start a new life as a bartender would not be HP fanfiction.

    A fic that focuses on a family of OCs who live through Grindelwald's rise and fall would be HP fanfiction.
