Might be an unpopular opinion, but I hate the way the house system is handled in the books. For me as a reader, it's a way of flattening otherwise rounded characters out, putting them into small boxes to make it easier for us to deal with the Loads And Loads Of Characters that JKR throws at us. Honestly, I can deal with the Loads And Loads Of Characters, even if JKR hadn't pigeonholed a lot of them.

Furthermore, the house system (IMHO) is stupid because there's only four of them, and it kind of galls me that each and every student who comes through the doors of Hogwarts is able to be sorted into one of those four. I think that this led to shoddy writing on JKR's part - writing each house as a monolithic entity and not really doing much with intra-house factionalism or splits or even - god forbid - writing INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERS as real people.

The thing is that this generally didn't happen in canon, except for maybe in the SLytherins but that could just be the observer bias since we see from Harry's pov. It happens an awful lot in fics because writers are lazy, bad or don't know any better. In the books there are some Hufflepuffs that are dicks, some Gryffindors that are cowardly, some Ravenclaws that do stupid shit and some Slytherins that are quite brave. The main issue is just that outside of Gryffindor there aren't many characters that get developed fully, but that's just because they don't get screentime.

Really only the Harry/Malfoy bias? It seems to me that throughout the books people rarely mingled together unless they where from the same house. Luna being an exception in the later books. Really I thought the only time the houses all came together was in book 5 with the DA and book 7 when when they finally realized that there one hope was with Harry. Most of the student romantic relationships seemed to be mostly confined to the house with only a couple of exceptions.

In the end it seemed to me that the house bias seemed to end in adulthood when there was no me Hogwarts houses to segregate people.

Pottermore's quiz doesn't actually sort you in accordance to your answers.

It sorts people in accordance to some quotas on filling out each House with equal numbers.

Oh well. I figured it was legit because it was supposed to be Rowling's site.

Keep in mind that we see canon through Harry's eyes. And barring any Voldemort shenanigans or kooky mysteries, dude's not exactly the most observant about the world around him.

I'll bang whichever house DarkSyaoran has relatives in. Which is probably going to be Hufflepuff anyway.

I would imagine that Ravenclaw students are more likely to have read/researched all the cool sex magic that's so prevalent in fanfic, but Slytherin are more likely to practice it.

    Tricky.

Ravenclaws are too mental. They'd be the sort of S.O. that spends half their time imagining new and terrible things that might ruin the relationship. Thus ruining the relationship. Or be too busy with their arcane research to actually spend time on the relationship.

Slytherins are too sly. How can you trust an S.O. who is always trying to get one over you and everyone else? You can't. But moreso, nothing is more annoying than having even your relationship be a power struggle. The prospect of dating a Slytherin just doesn't say 'stability' or 'comfort'.

Gryffindors are too brash, too emotional. They'd fly into a fit every time something goes wrong and cause more trouble than it was worth before any solution was found. Just look at Ron and Hermione. Or Harry and Ginny.

Hufflepuffs on the other hand are Loyal (Checkmate, Slytherins), Steadfast (Checkmate, Gryffindors), and Hard Working (Checkmate, Ravenclaws). A Hufflepuff is clearly the superior Boyfriend/Girlfriend. Hard day at work? A Hufflepuff would be there to help you relax, instead of taking advantage of your weakness for another power game. Having a disagreement? A Hufflepuff would rather talk it out than fly into a rage and storm off in a fit. Need some 'personal' time with your lover? A Hufflepuff won't leave you hanging for 'just one more chapter!'.

    Hufflepuffs: 10/10 (unf Susan Bones).

    Gryffindors: 7/10 (Hello Hermione.)

Slytherins: 5/10 (Older Movie!Pansy. Oh lawd.)

Ravenclaws: 3/10 (Cho is a weepy bint.)

Ravenclaws have Luna. Your argument is invalid.

Does the secret house meant for the heiress of all the four Founders count? A girl from the states who's had some time to learn some kickass magic, saved the world along with Harry, and pondered often on all the attractive male characters in the book (and Snape) - and has had her interest returned by all of the above?

Surely capturing the queen bee is a sign of my high Darwinian fitness?

But in reply to your question, I pose another question. Why not branch into Beauxbatons?

And yet, she's still one of my favorite characters in the books.

More to the point, I think Luna's existence does raise a valid point on the whole House stereotypes thing. Namely, that a lot of people tend to make very narrow pigeonholes for the four houses. Don't forget that Harry's year in Gryffindor included both a brainiac like Hermoine, Lavender Brown the airhead, and Neville, who started off as a coward.

You're wearing dem fanon glasses, my man. Luna is never described as being unattractive, only that she has big eyes and wears weird fucking clothes. In fact, Harry notes that she cleans up nicely at Slughorn's party.

Don't think she's supposed to be Fleur, Ginny, or even Cho level, but yeah, not ugly.

It's sad how blatantly jealous you are, lesser being, of my ascension. Tis not the fault of I, or others who share my fortune, that you are incapable.

Real Talk: That post was quality, mate. The fact that it was meant humorously doesn't alter that. It took time, effort, and more than one round of rewording. It even touched off discussion in the thread. Which makes it neither worthless nor pointless. Learn the definition of shitpost before you go around flinging accusations. There are some posts I've made since Prestige Mode started that could, perhaps, qualify as low-quality, but that wasn't one of them.

You're conflating stable and comfortable with boring. Generally, It's comfortable being on your living room couch playing games. Are you bored when you do it? Or perhaps in your own bed after a round of lovemaking with your S.O. Are you bored then?

Stable and comforting are merely two common themes. They need not define everything! Broaden your horizons, brother!
