That is what Snape should look like, yes. I don't want to have to spend money on these, but I might just have to...

Fair enough. I guess I've just grown attached to the version displayed in the first film.

I think I stand alone when I say I don't like illustrated books.

That's not to say I don't think these pictures are good.

Just that when reading a book I want to form my own mental image, and I find illustrations actually take away from the reading experience.

When I was reading the Dark Tower novels most of the paperbacks had illustrations every so many pages, something like sixty or eighty pages IIRC. On one hand I thought it was a (mostly) neat representation of the scenes depicted, but on others I felt it was too much.

Yeah, I have some issues with illustrated books in general, and I don't particularly like all of the pictures shown so far, but many of these look great, and it's a cool concept. For younger people, or people just getting introduced, this must be perfect.

Edit: I forgot, Hagrid's hut is awesome as fuck. I never thought of it as a fucking boat, but it works.

Eh, I can. I can also faintly see something of Neville in it so I'm not bothered. If anything I'm more reminded of this [IMG][IMG]

MAD Magazine wasn't much of a thing over here while I was a kid, unfortunately, otherwise I'd have made that connection too. Still, I want to see Ron and Neville as Beavis and Butthead now.

I don't like the way magic is portrayed here:

    Seems too "explode-y" for me.

I just bought the box set with Kibuishi's covers but I might just have to buy these. Everything regarding Hagrid (him, him on the bike, his hut) is on point.

I know the answer might be Magic, but are those trees holding up the castle?

So, this reminded me of something: the massive overuse in fanon of 'abused' Harry, particularly as license for him to be Dark!Indy!. Here, a lot of angst is cliché because it's not unfounded.

In canon, it's a bit easier to imagine something a bit nicer, and my memories have softened with time, as I last read the actual HP&tPS a long time ago...

As a Roald Dahl style allegory, it's fine. Printed to life, I can't help but think of the Dursleys as utter shitheels, deserving no less than having their kids taken away, and probably probation with Vernon getting roughed up in a holding cell overnight.

You're not alone. I don't think Gryffindor would have been wearing a patchwork hat, but personal opinions aside, it's made up of textile patterns that I don't think would have been around when Hogwarts was founded.

    Agreed.

And, is it just me, or does no one really know what bushy hair is? We've seen plenty of teased/ratted and/or crimped hair (early HP movies), wavy hair (later movies), and curly hair (these illustrations and many others) but rarely do I ever see a depiction of Hermione with just plain bushy hair.

Then again, I've seen a ton of blue-eyed, red and blonde-haired Hermione Grangers in drawings, too, so if friggin' colors are hard for people, I suppose differentiating types of hair must be somewhere up there with cracking the Voynich manuscript.

Draco looks like a human/gray-alien hybrid, the creepy little shit. Suits me just fine.

Repugnant Snape for the win, but what the hell is up with the head in a jar in the lower right of that pic? :fire

What would be your idea of bushy hair? I think sort of afro-like when I hear bushy, because bushes.

    These are absolutely beautiful.

This is going on to my 'things to buy when I get my first paycheck' list.

Hermione looks really weird, but I'm impressed with all the other pictures. I'm glad Snape is actually as ugly as the books described him to be. The price surprised me, I was expecting something unreasonable, but now I might actually buy this. Can't wait to see the rest of books.

To make a long explanation short: Something a bit more like this.

Incidentally, hair like I suspect Hermione's would be sits just about at the midway point between 'straight and fine hair' and 'African (kinky/wiry) hair': That is to say, Hermione's would be wavy and perhaps somewhat curly hair, which can often be frizzy and somewhat course.

Curly hair, for example, has a flatter cross section than fine hair. The flatter the shaft of the hair gets, the more prone it is to curling (like a ribbon)... and brittleness. African hair tends to be the curliest of the curly, sometimes so much that it curls back around itself.

And, because there are people out there who seem to think this is up for debate: Hermione is white; if nothing else, JKR's own drawings of the character depict her as such, and the buck most definitely stops with her. So I can safely say her 'bushy' hair definitely isn't an Afro.

I'm just hoping most of my hair remains attached to my fuckin' scalp.
Those photos are kind of a far cry from the smooth, shiny, cascading, curls and ringlets Emma is sporting for the latter movies.

Between her looks and her propensity for devouring other characters' lines and jumping fearlessly onto dragons' backs of her own volition, movie!Hermione really is a different creature from book!Hermione.

Eh, I'm not worried about that. :awesome

Despite a few images or portions of said images being a bit suspect, these new HP illustrations look pretty good. Hmm, I have no money for more books and even less space to put them in. Should I order this...
    Hmm.
