I don't think anyone would argue Ron isn't a flat character. But disliking a character because of technical writing reasons vs. disliking a character is if he or she's a real person is two different things.

I dislike the character of Ron, again, because he's flat and because I think there's a lot of wasted potential.

As for the person Ron was written to be, IRL I don't think I'd have gotten along with him all that well, but he's someone to put in the "alright, but our personalities just don't match" category.

Edit: And I really hate Ron bashing because it's damn lazy writing.

 

Really, any form of bashing in fics tends to be crappy that way, though Ron's pretty famous for getting it worse than most. I mean, there's a reason the trope is called Ron The Death Eater.

The annoying thing about bash-fics is that they tend to go so over-the-top that the character is unrecognizable and frankly absurd. I mean, if you want to make a story where Ron comes off badly, it's not that hard to build off his more negative aspects. He's got jealousy issues and an inferiority complex from being the youngest out of a whole bunch of brothers, and he's a bit of a quick-tempered "leap before you look" kind of guy.

But instead of actually building off his characters, bash-fics just tearn him into an insane psycho who wants to rape Hermoine, steal all of Harry's money, and then join Voldemort because ... well, no reason other than the fact that they're both evil.

 

The point of Ron bashing is to show what happens when you give power to the wrong person.

Sure, Harry and Ron may not be that apart when it comes to the type of person they are, but one must take into consideration that Harry has money, fame, power, etc. And Ron doesn't.

You will know the true colors of person once given power. And I highly doubt Ron, with his immaturity and low self-esteem, would not be an even worse person if given the same resources that Harry has.

 

The point of Ron bashing is to bash Ron. Nothing more, and I would say nothing less, but I dont think you can get much less.

You're looking at things on the surface, but all writing is a projection of the author subconscious thoughts.

Almost every Ron bashing story includes a Ron with power at his disposal, whether that be potions, money, or status.

Ron may not be a bad person, but I have no doubt that if given the same resources as Harry, that he would be much less of a Hero, if he were to be one at all.

95% of the time, Ron is written as the insanely jealous and or close-minded best friend archetype with nothing distinguishing him beyond those traits than level 99 vitriol, because the failshit author doing the bashing generally doesn't understand the intricacies of the character.

Ok I dislike Ron for two reasons. First he doesn't believe Harry in Gof. Second he abandons Harry in DH. These two reasons make me dislike Ron.

 

i think that this is a good point that plays on jkr's point about choices that Dumbledore says to harry. Ron is obviously harry's half-brother because James cheated on lily and had him in secret and since they're both so close to each other it's like she's trying to tell us about Harry and He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named except with friendship and being a good friend instead of a raging cunt.

Yes, Ron being Harry's half-brother is obviously a parallel to the Peverell brothers. jkr is obviously using Ron as the third side of the triangle and using him to enable Harry to become the true master of death.

 

But couldn't it also be that lily cheated with Arthur and they hid him at the burrow because of the red hair and the mix with the Weasleys and because molly is always such a repressing bitch to everyone and she just wants the key for harry's vault so she can buy things in secret for herself and maybe give ginny an allowance and teach her how to brew love potions so she can find herself a husband the same way her mother did?

I think that theor would explain so much!! and combine that with peverell and jkr is one hell of a lore crafter I think.

I think what really settled Ron's character for me was re-reading Chamber of Secrets. Ron followed the spiders into the Forbidden Forest for both Hagrid and Hermione.

Let me rephrase that.

Ron, whose worst fear in the world is a spider, followed an army of them into the Forbidden Forest to try and save his friends. When he was TWELVE. And Ron isn't just scared of spiders, he has a phobia of them. His literal worst fear, the sort that squeezes your chest in and leaves you unable to move, is of arachnids.

And he still fucking followed the fucking spiders into the fucking Forbidden Forest. To me, that's one of the greatest, and most overlooked, acts of bravery in the books.

Not to mention Ron-bashing is often done for shipping reasons, since so much of the Ron-bashing happens in Harry/Hermoine fics. Because it's not like those two could hook up without Ron becoming so evil that even Voldemort would think he's gone too far. The writers just see Ron as standing in the way of their OTP, and proceed to do everything they can to prove how unworthy Ron is of Hermoine.
