I found Bianca's stupidity a bit hard to believe. Given what she'd seen Dresden was capable of, following that firestorm at her shindig, the first thing any competent villain would do would be to kill him once he was down for the count. Instead she tosses him in a cell with Justine with no attempt to thrall him or even completely restrain him, when by all rights she should have smashed his head like a pumpkin and toss him into that graveyard she paid for.

However then again that seems to be a running theme in the books - a lot of baddies underestimate Dresden, much to their own detriment so /shrug

I never got past the first book. I can't even recall if I finished it.

She didn't kill him because she wasn't allowed.

That's why Ortega was around. The plan was to get the war started all along.

I never quite got the hate for the first two, although they are far from the best in the series, I'll agree. My least favourite is Blood Rites, which I usually forget exists completely, despite all the pretty important stuff that happens in it.

    I also disliked Fool Moon.

Especially Murphy, she was horrible in that book and I just wanted her to die.

Now she's one of the best characters in the series and I can't imagine it without her.

He didn't want spoilers for the series at large, might want to edit this.

Though didn't the war get kicked off too early for the Reds? I seem to recall that being a point of irritation.

Blood Rites is also very weak. I find the whole
pornset plot to be a bit laughable, and I've never found white court vampires to be interesting at all. The whole supernatural succubus thing is a bit boring. It would be a hell of a lot more interesting if Dresden actually used the Denarian coin and had Lasciel influencing him. Having "The Temptress" parading around in a pornset would be funny.

You must make it so, Anarchy. :D You must. I agree that the particular part of the plot wasn't great... However, the other part was awesome.

Fixed my post, Ched. Sorry about any spoilers.

Hey DLP, have I got a treat for you. As was suggested, here I am, sharing my thoughts about my DF adventure. It's been a while, but I read Summer Knight and Death Masks.

    Spoilerific stuff follows.

On Summer Knight, first I'll say that it was a step up in fun factor. The whole climate apocalypse mystery was pretty cool. I didn't see Aurora coming at all. Butcher seems to have a talent for setting up Chekhov's guns (the statue of Lily). The final battle on the field of the Stone Table was an appropriately awesome action piece, though for the life of me I couldn't see it made from clouds and my imagination kept replacing it with actual dirt and grass. I have complaints though. First, the Wal-Mart battle was kind of confusing in the middle. Second, so much action. The Tigress, I felt, overstayed her welcome. Maybe it's the way some action scenes were written, but it got a bit tedious and I ended up putting the reading off for a day when I got to the finale, so I could appreciate it with a fresh mind. Overall, Summer Knight, good stuff, can recommend.

Death Masks. Well. I'll say that of the first five books, it's the best one. The Denarians tickle my fancy. Knights of the Cross do as well. What little there was of Marcone was great. Truly, less is more. The finale, with the helicopter and a battle on top of a moving train felt very mission impossible. The Ortega plot was very much overshadowed by the Danarians and the apocalypse plague curse, but it wasn't bad. The final fuck you from Nick, throwing the coin on the lawn in front of Harry and Harry was deliciously cheeky, even if it failed. Nick is out there, he's still dangerous and now Harry's on his radar. The big complaint here, and I know this is my fanfic-grown bias talking, I really didn't need the sex scene. I suppose it was competently written, but it just felt too Twilighty for my tastes, with the whole lust-anger-vampire-sex angle. But, a pretty great book.

Nice to hear you're enjoying the books. The next one has some pretty cool stuff, but also some rather weak ones. Beyond it, it's smooth sailing all the way until Ghost Story.

Death Masks is the book where I 'got into' the series. I quite enjoyed all of them from there on out. Hope it's the same for you!

Hahahaaa, yeah, Harry didn't need that sex scene either. Hahahahaha. Consequences ftw.
