Yeah, one of the problems with the CGI in a the prequels was that the static camera angles gave viewers more time to pick out all those little details that didn't seem right. Especially since a lot of the CGI got tossed around in what looked like an effort to distract the audience from the wooden performances and stilted dialogue.

Plus, like you said, all the excessive cleanliness made the move look like what it was: a film shot in a climate-controlled studio against a green screen. It never created the illusion that this was a real universe that people lived in on a day-to-day basis.

I don't think I've ever been so hyped about anything really. My hopes of this trilogy exceeding the expectations has gone up.

I watched the prequels last week and I must agree that the CGI in them is seriously weird, everything looks so clean and sometimes out of place. Especially the section that happens in Kamino in Episode II, everything is so white and clean, it just doesn't look good.

Also watched the short video of how they filmed the Episode VII and they're saying that most of the explosions are real, and aliens are mostly people in costumes, not the CGI shit that was in the prequels.

There'll still be plenty of CGI in addition to the practical effects, it'll just be good CGI.

Yes of course, that's basically how movies are made nowadays and the CGI can be good. And I expect it to be very good, as seen in the trailer and the few teasers before that.

The problem is that there are so many bad examples of CGI, even in 2015. I especially didn't like the CGI in Hobbit, Avengers on the other hand had some pretty impressive shots.

That the prequels were recorded from 1997 to 2004 also adds some bad quality as CGI wasn't as developed as it is now, on top of that they also overused it, and the result obviously wasn't particularly good.

My only regret is that the tiny little teasers they had, to make it seem like Revan might be in this movie (the guy dressed in a very similar outfit, the actor playing Kylo Ren who looks just like Revan's SWTOR model, the purple lightsaber on the poster, etc.) probably were all just wishful fantasy, after the scene Ren had in the trailer about Vader.

The Sith lightsaber still weirds me out but it otherwise looks like an really interesting movie so far.

So, with the lack of Luke shown, am I the only speculating that Luke is the new Darth?

And dammit, despite my cynicism, I keep getting my hopes up about this film.

Point of order: Kylo Ren is confirmed as not being a Sith per se, but he DOES use the Dark Side of the Force

In no way do I think Luke is a villain now, it would be very weak, plus the two villains we've seen both have their own notable actors attached (this could be misdirection hiding a third, Luke-shaped villain of course)

However I do hope that Luke is really fucked up by this point, because of whatever apparently drove him into hiding.

Luke is in the trailer at 1:41 placing a hand on R2-D2. The lack of him in the posters and trailers either means it's all intentional and he's actually got a big role, or he just doesn't have much screen time IMO.

Kylo Ren's a member of the Knights of Ren, which is some kind of new Dark Side organization. I guess they take on the "Ren" name in the same way that "Darth" was used as a title for the Sith.

Kylo Ren is obsessed with Darth Vader, according to Entertainment Weekly's issue on the movie he models his appearance after him, and I guess according to this trailer scavenged Endor for his helmet. It appears that he wishes to take up his mantle.

I wonder what the 'I will finish what you started' line is about, given Vader's various motives. The domination of the dark side over the light? Ruling the universe? Converting Luke?

Ressurecting Padme? :awesome (oh god the lulz)

This was my theory - maybe he'd found out about Anakin's mission pre-Vader, and is out to wipe out the Jedi completely.

    My plot prediction:

I theorized a few months ago (After hearing the voice-over in the second trailer) on another board that Luke is in hiding, and Han and company deliver force-sensitives to him for training. Kylo was the first, and discovered the dark side, and from there learned of Vader/Anakin's exploits and wants to carry on the legacy. Han's speech to Rey/Finn in front of the star chart in the latest trailer hasn't exactly dimmed that theory for me, but they've done such a good job at blackout on this that it could be total shit. I'm hoping it is, in fact, and is much better. :)

It's likely because Order 66 and then Darth Vader wiped out the vast majority of the Jedi in the galaxy, and Palpatine/Vader were the only two Sith at that point.

Also, the Jedi weren't the public face of the war effort. They were generals, and how many people know who the generals are in any given conflict? On top of that the vast majority of the people on both sides of the conflict were either clones troopers or droids. I doubt that they talked much about their leaders at all, really. At least not to outsiders.

Only reason why I used them was because I wasn't sure if there were rules set out earlier :-/

I think Luke is going to have a Yoda/Ben Kenobi role, essentially teaching the new main characters about the force and themselves and all that kind of shit.

The thing is, from the sound of it, NO ONE knows what happened back in the day with Luke, Vader, and the Emperor. Han has to assure them that that shit was real, not just a story. That's pretty much the exact opposite route every EU ever went. These trailers have me so hyped because I have no fucking clue which direction the movie might be going- they didn't spoil it by putting all the best scenes in the trailer to make it look cooler.

    Thats pretty freaking awesome imo.
