My biggest problem with No-Maj is how it sounds when you try to use the plural.

I've been imagining nomaj as an invariant noun like sheep or deer. You have a nomaj and you have those nomaj.

 

I'm all for the term nomaj because it means those in the United States can go out trolling for some nomaj vag.

I do actually like the term...I like it decidedly less if it is 'nomajes' instead of an irregular plural like 'those nomaj' though.

 

No-maji (pl.)? Pronounced as "magi" normally would be, I could deal with that.

 

I like the costume design. Though like with the rest of movies I think it's a bit too muggle.

I'm also fine with no-maj, doesn't bother me at all. It was to be expected that Americans would have different slang than Brits.

Pretty sure it dates back to 4chan.

I'm O.k. with it so far tbh because I'm assuming were getting an intro to the U.S magical world but the movie can't be contained there unless all magical creatures can be found in Pennsylvania...

 

I wonder what role the Congress will play (I mean, it's on the promo poster, probably getting more than a reference) and whether Newt will end up with an American sidekick.

Very basic description of the plot:

"Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander (Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) comes to New York with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles (who are called “No-Maj” in the States) and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK (remember the Salem witch trials?). Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous … get out of their case. "

I don't know how I feel about this. I think it may be a comedy over a serious adventure story. Or this is a shitty summary.

 

One suspects that it won't be an accident that the creatures get out of the case. Someone will be behind it.

Movies need antagonists, after all, and magical beasts aren't enough to fit the bill.

 

Don't know if you've seen that, but the comment about Mary-Lou makes me think there will be some Wizard VS Muggle involved. That and a gigantic dimensional trunk, what's to ask?

Very nervous about the wizards vs Muggles themes.

 

At the very least you wonder how "no-maj-elborns" are dealt with.

 

Maybe JK will have wizards roflstomp muggles and put all magitech debates to bed forever.

Then again, probably not.

 

I mean, if it's wizards vs. Muggles, then good storytelling at least demands that you make the Muggles a credible threat.

Which is exactly why I'm nervous lol. I think we can expect some serious nerfing of magic coming up.

Oh, and I'm also really nervous about the legilimency thing. Cool ability, but it's a visual medium, which might mean they resort to mindscapes to depict it.

 

I really liked the cover picture Newt looked great for a man named after a lizard. Anyhow! The magical congress thing is great, but its set in like 1920's isnt it? So anything about magitech fanfiction stuff could still happen when said technology actually exists for muggles. Maybe there will be a "evil" magical species poacher that Newt will have to fight against or something. Who knows! Im fairly excited for it though.
