    There's nothing to mock.

A writer who lacks self-awareness is a writer who has no sense of direction.

Changing the core of who characters are is something only done by garbage writers.

Might as well make a story where Dumbledore is not a wizard or where Voldemort is a muggle loving revolutionist.

Only worthless writers would write such drivel.

I'm struggling to see how you're equating changing Dumbledore or Voldemort, main characters, to changing the "characterization" of shows-up-for-one-paragraph-in-the-entire-story Blaise Zabini or shows-up-for-one-sentence Daphne Greengrass.

I want to mock you because you sound like a spoiled child who expects to get their way when they make a demand as if their word is law.

Also, Dumbledore and Voldemort are well established characters with hundreds and thousands of lines of dialogue establishing their positions. Even then, you can tweak them and move them about their little boxes to get differing perspectives and motivations.

You sounds like an incredibly unimaginative and boring person.

No it's just something that can only be done well by talented writers. Or are you saying that the Denarian, TLIL, On the way to Greatness, and all others UA who twist Harry's character are garbage? And of course, MonkeyEpoxy and Download are right when they say that changing Zabini a bit (since there's nothing to change about Greengrass anyway) doesn't even begin to compare to changing a main character.
If you can't comprehend that Zabini could be any kind of "Muggleborn lover" and still have reasons to say what he says in the beginning of HBP, it's no use talking to you.

Now, since it's a Pet Peeves thread, you're perfectly allowed to hate whatever you want, just I'm perfectly allowed to think anyone's opinion who "changes the core of who Harry is" by saying he's a poor traumatized child who can't take a piss without asking Dumbledore if he can is garbage.

In topic, new peeve of mine:

When an author writes a scene from the Bad Guy’s POV to explain what the Evil Scheme is going to be. It takes the surprise out of the reveal and it destroys any conflict it could have created (cause 9 out of 10 the hero will need one chapter max to escape the ‘foolproof’ scheme, or the author wouldn’t need to expose its awasomeness beforehand).

Same thing in a romance fic when you have the girl discussing with her friends / wondering endlessly about the changes in Harry’s reactions to her. Why would you want to annihilate the last specks of suspense in your fic like that?

Well, I suppose I should say multi-POV fics in general are a peeve. So few authors manage to pull it off. I wanted to re-read Awakening Power, I really did, but one chapter consisting only of 8 different POVs reviewing Harry fucking birthday was too much.

You sound like the type of person who reads stories of Harry being gay for Draco.

---------- Post automerged at 03:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 AM ----------

This is more about Blaise Zabini, although I think the Ice Queen person for Daphne is pathetic since it's nothing more than a writer's attempt to stroke their own nonexistent ego.

Ah, this makes perfect sense now.

You read a slash fic, got your young mind scared by it, and are now irrationally hating anything that changes the plot of Harry Potter.

Where's the line on this exactly? Because I agree that the given scenario is a bit dull - from being over used more than anything - but I've also read stories where Harry has been captured for 10 chapters and they make me want to put a bullet through my head out of boredom.

    Same/10.

    Nope never. Ever. happened.

edit: have you ever written anything?

You have such strong opinions about writing but you sound utterly incompetent.

edit2: Voldemort as a muggle loving revolutionary as a reaction to his time in slytherin house in a world where grindelwald won is fucking awesome. He'd still be psycho and torture people to death and shit.

    I could see that.

My impression has always been that Voldemort didn't really hate one group of people per day, rather he saw the purebloods in society as a means to an end. Voldemort was a manipulative psychopath who wanted his own army so he could take over the UK/World/whatever, and the Purebloods were the perfect group for it. In a world where muggleborns are the most likely group to rebel he would have moved himself into the position of their leader instead.

That might have been the case at one time, but that ended not long after he was revealed to be a guy.

At least, that is, if the plethora of summaries I've seen that indicate a Draco/Blaise/Harry pairing are any indication... which seem almost evenly split between ones where they are dominant over a submissive Harry, and ones with them being in a three-way bond. Or both. :puke:

It's apparently the flavor of the month (where 'month' could mean 'next few godforsaken years').

Surprisingly, you still see the occasional newly written story where Blaise is apparently a white Italian dude, despite canon being blatantly clear on this issue.

Then again, people are still calling him Zambini and Zamboni, so... whatever. :facepalm

And, regarding Slytherin guys in Harry's year, why do Draco and Blaise get most of the attention? You hardly ever see Theodore Nott featuring heavily in fan fic. Not that I want him to. Maybe it's because the authors don't see him as being 'dreamy' enough.

Personally, I see his appearance as a teenage cross between this...

    and this...

Pale-skinned, scrawny with a skinny neck, protruding Adam's apple, a nose of not inconsiderable length with a prominent bump at the top, and black hair that's plastered down to his head in a style that was probably only fashionable among purebloods, and even then only when his great grandparents were in school.
If others picture him the same way, that could explain his notable absence in fan fiction. It can't be because he doesn't fit the purposes of the plot because, let's face it, people aren't clicking on sub!Harry/Draco/Blaise for plot.

Though I shudder at the notion that my thoughts might bear any similarity to those of people who regularly consume those stories.

    I feel ya.

On a somewhat related note, I'm still waiting for the Harry Johnson series to continue.

This is the most piddly of pet peeves. But: merely.

Particularly in dialogue. It's so often used to show how clever a character is in some stupid monologue of a moronic 'I'm the only clever one' speech that I've begun to hate seeing the word used, even appropriately.

    Let the Derps begin! :facepalm

It took me three posts to get you to answer that you made up the weird quotes that you used in that thread. The way you described them only superficially similar to their portrayal in the seven canon books we all read.

You just got back. Just stop. Just for the love of god stop this shit!fuck stupid arguing. Every now and then you do post something interesting and you do remember the events of the book well. Do that stuff.

The sequel to A Brand New Start; Hydrus/Harry goes back and saves his parents, what will that do to change the timeline?

    Why?

It's not the fact that he escapes quickly that annoys me, it's the fact that the author spent half a chapter in Bad Guy's POV explaining how incredibly awesome the plot was. You can't tell me a plot is awesome and show me it's dumb as hell in the same fic.

My recollection is that the widespread understanding and adoption of Blaise as a black dude was the point when Daphne Greengrass started showing up in fanfics. The fanfiction.net character selector didn't include her for a long while.

As for Theo Nott- wasn't he the chinless upperclass twit hanging with Draco in Hogsmeade in the third film? One bad visual cue can kill a thousand lady-boners, just as well as Alan Rickman's honeyed basso and vocal cadence brings them to life.

Snape onscreen: "IIII will attemPT to penetrate your miiiiind, and you will attemPT to stop me. Prepaaare yourself."

Girls in theatre: 'Theo who? Shut up, he's going to speak again any second, I know it.'

I can't remember if I've said this before in Peeves or if it was in a review.

But why do people give Old!Harry the same hangups as Teenager!Harry?

In many stories where an older (ages anything from 30 - 9,999,999) Harry is featured he is still hung up over Sirius's death. In some cases he even angsts over Cedric's death. It just seems bizarre to me. There's stories where Harry is literally centuries old, and has raised whole generations of children/grand-children, but his greatest desire is to find Sirius?

    What?

Because the authors are dumb teenagers who have never had to think of something on the scale of many years.
