You do realize gay originally meant happy, it was only later it started to mean homosexual.

The only time I've ever heard gay used properly was in the Flintstones theme song.

    Writing peeve:

People writing spoken foreign language in a non-Latin alphabet. You should be writing it phonetically in Latin characters. It ruins the immersion and is annoying because I can't get a feel for the sound of the speech. It's also mostly done by people who think they're smart do it.

Well that's not 'proper' any more. The word has been redefined. See any dictionary.

Same goes for writers writing conversations in a whole different language. Or even just a line or two. Especially since they almost always add the translation at the foot of the chapter. Like if you wanted me to understand what was said why aren't you telling me during the moment? It's just bad.

The only time I disagree with that is if your trying to show the lack of comprehension by a character. It wouldn't make much sense if their speaking in English and the character can't understand them. In that case though, I wouldn't put a footnote about it.

I've got no problem with mundane instead of muggle if the author decides to use it. As long as they don't harp on about it, just make it a seamless switch. Certainly sounds better then nomaj.

I found it ironic though when fics do harp on about muggle being insulting they then decide to call an entire race mundane.

Nomaj seems pretty fine to me actually. Like saying nomad with a j. I think it just looks really weird written.

Isn't Nomaj something in a Liverpool accent?

Any kind of change like that from Muggle bothers me, unless it's being used in a way that indicates different cultures. For instance, in my fic, I use "Vulgaire" rather than Muggle when someone from the French/Italian culture is speaking - mainly as a derivative from the Latin meaning basically the same as Muggle.

For me, it's just another way of keeping true to the linguistic roots between cultures.

Knockturn Alley being some uber place where you can get all the dark arts stuff.
Harry being heir of Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw etc.
Parsel Magic or anything that glorifies parseltongue.
Chamber Of Secrets being this uber place where all uber spells are located.
    Harry being a pureblood.
Magical block placed on Harry by Dumbledore.
    Dual wands, Wand Holsters etc.

Having a spare wand and a wand holster so you don't remove a buttocks sounds reasonable too me, it's just some writers spend far too much time with it.

When a character responds to an offhand comment or question with a paragraph long description of their entire backstory. It makes me wonder if the writer has ever actually held a conversation. Who in the entire world takes the first opportunity possible to provide an in depth autobiography?

It's always made worse by the character having a grimdark background. Instead of making the character more interesting, likable, or dynamic, they pretty much always come across as whiny assholes.

Some characters don't talk. They make speeches.

Every fucking time they open their mouth.

I agree, but it should be noted that some people exist who talk too much. I just endured twenty minute speech about old semiconductor companies from my teamworker after making small offhand comment about television he was repairing.

...at least it wasn't his lifestory, it could have been worse.

That sort of infodump really stretches any sort of suspension of disbelief.

"Ahh, Harry Potter. You have a very interesting mind, most interesting in 1000 years. You are very loyal to those few who earn your trust, you are very smart, you are brave and you are cunning. So where to put you?"

    Fuck you, author.
