It's hard to talk about characterisations for next-gen characters, honestly. They're basically "Canon OCs" or at least a lot of them are.

Also that scene is so freaking cringey to me because of that Generation Xerox you pointed out. What the hell, JKR.

Also, if I'm remembering correctly, my single favourite Bellatrix characterisation has to be from Time Heals All Wounds. The humanisation which is applied is definitely unsubtle, but brilliant nonetheless. Delenda Est was also good with regard to her character, but the rest of the fic was sadly rather disappointing. I stopped midway through.

Delenda Est's Bellatrix is dramatically different from her original characterization, but I thought it was done well and properly justified by the story, even if the initial setup is a very handwavey "this happened just because".

Dudley: They flush people's heads down the toilet first day at Stonewall. Want to practice?
Harry: No thanks. The poor toilet's never had anything as horrible as your head in it; it might be sick.

Dudley: I know what day it is.
Harry: Well done. You've finally learned the days of the week.

Uncle Vernon: Watching the news? Again?
Harry: Well, it changes everyday, you see.

Dudley: Not this brave at night, are you?
Harry: This is night, Diddykins. That's what we call it when it goes all dark like this.

Uncle Vernon: You bring her back! You bring her back now, you put her right!
Harry: No! She deserved what she got! Keep away from me.
Uncle Vernon: You're not allowed to do magic outside of school.
    Harry: Yeah? Try me.
Uncle Vernon: They won't take you back now! You've nowhere to go!
Harry: I don't care! Anywhere's better than here.

I feel like people are too affected by fanon.

If whole monster in the chest was replaced with such drollness, it would be like 300% better, I think.

I don;t quite undertand what you mean.

But if you're saying that the series would have been on a whole other level if Harry's personality constantly maintained this level of wit then I would have to agree with you.

He's referring to the "chest monster" that Harry uses to describe his sudden romantic interest in Ginny.

That's pretty much what it was, but so many people had an erection for Hermine Granger they couldn't accept any other relationship. Others simply hated the Weasley family for whatever reasons. Then, there's a few who actually disliked the minimal foreshadowing of any kind of possible deep relationship between the two after her fangirl approach the first book and a half. Unfortunately, it's that last group that I most disappointed in for missing all the subtle indicators throughout the series that she was the only person whom Harry could be with, without throwing the entire series out of balance.

Whenever I re-read I'm always surprised by just how snarky he actually is.

Hmm? Do you mean compared to any other girl in the series? Regardless, I think I missed that.

(Personally, I don't have a horse in the race, except inasmuch as no-ship is one.)

    That.

I don't remember hormones being that… debilitating as it seemed in the books (well as far as I remember). Like you're normal yourself, than bam! you're chest-monster witless idiot.

For me it was the sheer ridiculousness of everyone being in true-love-forever-for-life at 16/17 years old. And the no hormones beyond first crush and then true love situation.

It's clearly been a while since you were a teenager. You just described hormones ina nutshell right there.

I'm pretty sure I'm not that old. And while I admit there is certain drama and many this-is-the-most-important-thing-ever moments…

But then again, it's different for everyone, I'd guess. I simply don't enjoy Harry's version.

Throughout the entire series, the narrative revolves around two people who are mirrors of each other: Harry and Snape. They balance each other out throughout the story, and interact exactly as you would expect them to in that type of situation.

I'm too lazy to look for it now, but if you search through some of the older threads, you'll find a long explanation I've written (probably more than once) identifying the relationship.

I actually found no characterisation more fitting than what I've read in the German fanfiction "Der Phönix und die Hirschkuh" (The Phoenix and the Doe) for both Snape and Dumbledore.
I know this might not help most English folk around here, but those who are from Germany should definitely try this one out.

The weaknesses of Dumbledore are mentioned, Snape's behaviour isn't portrayed in a positive light and although it does have its lengthy moments and a slightly purple-ish language, it is one of the best German fanfictions.

One of my favorite Voldemort characterizations- at least one that hasn't been mentioned yet- is from Honey, by Mark Geoffrey Norrish. There's something about a Voldemort who's so outright devious and cunning that gets me. I really need to read POtDK some time though, I've heard good things about that Voldemort.

That said, I think Voldemort is one of the easier characters to write- any actual writers want to confirm/deny that?
