That's not much of a stretch. In England I believe most of us get taught about utilitarianism at school.

I think it's more about the significance associated with Dumbledore by 11 year old Harry.

I don't meant the generic phrase. Of course everyone know that. What I meant, Grindelwald used the phrase, but people only found about the Grindelwald/Dumbledore connection after he died. So how can people(read Harry) angst about Dumbledore using the Greater Good excuse for everything?

My problem with it is it's done so commonly on the side. It's just mentioned almost in passing for no reason other than to try and make her interesting and rarely if ever has any point. Now a fic starring Luna might be different, but I don't read those.

If they're pure filler, then I agree with you. However, if it's part of a larger plot, say, there's character development going on, as well as learning other kinds of magic, etc., then I think it's fine. It's what I tried to do in WAVC where he learns how to fight both physically and magical at Durmstrang while also going through massive amounts of character development (along with Fleur). But, to your point, I really have no scene where someone sets him down and says, "this is how you throw a punch" or "this is how you block." It's just hinted at that he's learning it.

Not really a pet peeve, but a major peeve - the sheer breadth of Draco/Harry fics. Why? I cannot understand it for the life of me. Why??? There's so many of them and they're one of the three most popular pairings in the fandom. I don't get it.

Because a big part of the fandom is comprised of teenage girls who use their imagination to construct arousing scenarios with unrealistic versions of those two male characters?

I can sort of see the 'reasoning' behind that. It's actually relatively normal for a slash pairing.

What I don't understand is Snarry. Or Harry with Lucius, or Sirus, or as in one memorable fic Aberforth.

Well... you're going to find slash in any fandom. It's pretty much guaranteed. Beyond that, many (me included) enjoy seeing the dynamic of a romantic relationship between two people who didn't get along in canon, and how a writer can work past their many differences.

From one perspective its no less reasonable than Lord Potter-Black-Gryffindor-Slythering-Ravenclaw-Hufflepuff-Merlin as a plot device. Its non-canon, just like most other fanfiction. Not worth getting peeved about.

Using that argument there is no reason to ever be peeved by fanfiction, yet we are.

Wow just wow. 31 chapters of this crap and the author couldn't even be assed to add Mpreg to the mix or tag this as "horror".

While I support the idea that that tag should be mandatory I really didn't need it to know this story was going to be one of ...those.

When it comes to fanfiction you must make the assumption that every story is one of those unless mentioned otherwise.

The hints were all there...though it makes me kind of curious. I never had the nerve to actually read one of those M-preg fics, how does that even work? The baby is delivered by cesarean or...?

    Oh God.

Yeah I haven't either, not that I wanted to. Had a disturbing thought scrolling past summaries yesterday though when I tried to imagine how exactly the preg occurred. Shit's nasty.

When I was younger and more masochistic I tried reading an Mpreg. The details where pretty scarce and I don't think many of these authors even know enough of what a normal pregnancy is like in order to describe it let alone an Mpreg.
My thought of an Mpreg is more along the lines of Harry downing a bottle of exlax just before a steamy Harry/Snape slash scene, and voila an unspeakable anal birth.

there are so many possibilities, baby bursting out of the stomach à la Alien? Or perhaps budding? Picture Voldemort growing out of Quirrells head, had he not been killed perhaps Voldemort would have climbed out and left Quirrell alive.
