I didn't read the books as saying that Harry is magically strong, just good under pressure and a practical magic - actually using the spells. I thought the whole concept of a magical core in a person, and 'strength' was fanon, and it was all skill and confidence in the books? Been a while since I read them all though.

 

I think we should consider where adult Auror Harry Potter would stand instead of teenager Harry, who hasn't completed his education. I think realistically Harry would reach the second tier of power OP mentioned. Becoming a powerful, combat oriented wizard like Kingsley is well within his capabilities, but a deeper understanding of magic like the one Voldemort or Dumbledore had is not.

 

But for the most part the attitude of Harry is that he wants to spend the majority of his time messing about instead of learning at school. So from what is shown he does very little studying yet he is somehow looked up to by the others (5th book). Based on that and what we see him do over the course of the series shouldn't we assume he is actually pretty powerful or at least has a lot of natural talent?

 

Pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one. Harry might have the power but he never demonstrates real intelligence - rather relying on Hermione. To be in the same league as Dumbledore & Voldemort you need both; It's not what you have but how you use it...

In theory a good one could be written. However I don't see it happening. The stories that exist today suffer from the lack of conflict within the union. Cheap plot devices such as magical bonds/contracts to set it up. And are generally and almost always terrible written. And lack of plot.

I still haven't seen a fic about magical STDs where the penis grows wings and flies away, and you have hunt it down to get it back. Tho there were a few fics with Vagina dentata.

 

I don't mind Harry/multi. There are so many pairings, why pick one? Seriously, though, a good fic is hard to come by. Could it work? The problem is that polyamory as described in fanfiction has little resemblance to any kind of polyamory that happens in real life.

This is, obviously, because the author has no experience with such relationships (and frankly probably no experience with any relationships).

This is not to say that it couldn't be done properly, but this genre of stories is generally populated by wish-fulfillment fantasies rather than realistic explorations of the concept, so there's little point unless you're trying to educate people.

 

Basically no. It won't work. Maybe it could work if you made it massively AU and crossed it over with another universe where such a thing was common, but even then you'd probably have to start from the ground up. Harry doesn't exactly have the personality for it. You'd end up writing a story about a guy named Harry Potter that is very vaguely related to the HP universe. The other option would be to make it parody, but I don't think that's the type of fic you are talking about here.

There is a reason that you almost never see relationships like this in real life, and when you do see them, it quite often involves some really messed up people, a cult, or people just outright getting arrested.
