He's talking about big sci-fi franchise films so he's probably referring to Star Trek Into Darkness.

Oooooh... 3 films. For some reason I thought he meant 3 separate franchises.

Hmm... I liked ST:ID. Oh well.

Correct, but I am also not a fan of the Mission Impossible films or Super 8.

I saw this yesterday. I just couldn't shake the feeling it was a rehash of Ep IV and this had an impact on my enjoyment of the movie. I went in blind, having only seen the first trailer and some posters. I was expecting Finn to be force-sensitive and was kinda disappointed. In hindsight, if he was force-sensitive, the Empire First Order would probably detect it.

I'm not sure how I feel about Rey and a draw/escape ending in the Kylo Ren fight would have made more sense (plotwise).
By the way, why did Kylo punch himself? To dull the pain? I did not get it.

Overall the movie looks amazing and the acting is way better than both the original and prequel trilogies. Biggest problem, I think, was having too much expectations from it.

7.5/10. It's a rehash, yes, but a well made one. Would watch again.

They definitely can (or could in the old canon), but I'd be surprised if that obscure ability was being referenced. I interpreted it as a way of coping with the wound and its effects, in the same way you slap tired muscles, or to get feeling into them - a ritual, to get past the pain.

No idea how accurate that is, though.

Saw it again today, appreciated it far more. Most of my previous peeves were washed away, and I found myself less critiquing and more accepting. Probably give it an 8/10, if i were to review now.

Chief things that still annoyed me were the disregarding of actual and EU-established science in some of the scenes (light speed in the planets gravity, communication in hyperspace, seeing the Republics' demise, and so on).

Yeah, I just rewatched it too and, like others have said, the second viewing is far better. The destruction of the Republic still grates, but the final fight against Kylo now flows much better. It's clear that Kylo was toying with Finn until he got hit, at which point he takes Finn out in three seconds flat. It's also clear that Rey was basically running from him during the first portion of the fight, and he's focused on capturing her and trying to turn her. The part where she beats him is still iffy, but I'm hoping the later films will find a way to handle the tension well despite that.

I still didn't like Maz Kanata, same as the first time I saw the film. She feels like a Mary Sue more than Rey did, this old, wise mentor who's there to talk about how she 'knows the force' and can 'see the same eyes in different people'. She doesn't have Yoda's crankiness or Obi Wan's charm, so she just comes off as a Deus ex that I don't really see the point of.

Didn't Malgus deliberately kill his Twi'Lek gf to use that pain for strength? I remember reading that somewhere.

    Seems... Pertinent.

Not sure if you're referring to dark side users drawing strength from pain or Sion's immortality, but the drawing strength part should be a very basic application, and seems the most plausible cause. Sion just took that to the insane extreme.

Feeding on anger, hate and pain is like the most basic thing darksiders do.

Just the pain. And is it? I don't think it's ever been referenced in a movie.

Like 99% of Palpatine's lines in RotJ are about that.

EDIT: Hmm, no, only hate and anger, never mind. I thought pain was slipped in there at some point.

It's not really a large leap though. Dark emotions or thoughts strengthen the Dark Side.

I'm really jazzed that Avatar lost the top spot at the domestic box office. God I fucking hated that movie.

I've heard that she was involved in some scenes that ended up getting cut from the film. So maybe her part was originally elaborated on so it made sense but got cut for running time reasons.

I didn't go to a second screening when I planned to, but I saw it again today and have a clearer picture of some things.

    1. Kylo Ren is, indeed, a badass.

Those two stormtroopers just noped out. He broke Poe like a twig after he resisted previous interrogations. His entrance, with stasis-freezing the blaster bolt and Poe's WTF at it, was awesome. Sure, some of the badassery factor was lost without the mask, but those scenes showed that Kylo, while assuming the role of Snoke's top dog easily, still has some things to learn. It makes him more interesting to me. Adam Driver did a very good job.

I'm still iffy about the outcome of the final fight, but I paid close attention this time and Kylo was clearly toying with Finn until he got too careless and got hit, at which point he took Finn out in like four seconds.

He had Rey on the defensive for most of the time, while injured by the bowcaster (and that thing was shown to be capable of producing small explosions on impact) and only after Rey got her Divine Power Up was he overwhelmed. It's like the one thing I really dislike about the film, also because, as has been said many times, it would make more sense plot-wise to have Rey lose that first time so that a future victory had more impact. But as it is, I really hope that Kylo beats the shit out of her in Episode VIII before the inevitable fall in Episode IX. If that's what they're going for, it could be good.

    2. I actually liked what little there was of Poe & Finn bromance more than the relationship between Finn and Rey. Hope we see more of those two.

    3. Finn is definitely my favorite of the new cast, with Kylo as a close second. Finn is just the man. Despite him being more of a comic relief sidekick to Rey, I liked his arc. He starts out as this nervous ex-stormtrooper who just wants to get the fuck away from his former employers, eventually becoming a badass in his own right and, I noticed, ends up being a Big Deal in the Resistance, since he played a major role in the final battle.

Plus, we all know stormtroopers mostly have shit aim, but Finn isn't without his own talents. He's great with a blaster, getting good with ship cannons and even though he must have known that he didn't stand a chance against Kylo with a lightsaber, he still took him on like a champ. Finn fucking rocks.

    4. Of the new cast, I liked Rey the least. Not that she was bad, but I'm wary of her super special specialness.

Now that I've seen the movie twice and had time to think about it, I give a 9/10.

I usually see it posted in those "Humanity Fuck Yeah" threads.

Avatar certainly could've been a lot better. Looked pretty though.
