I dislike telepathic powers as well, at least if you refer to direct dialog between two parties. What I can see, however, is a phoenix transmitting a sense of mood toward whomever it speaks with.

For example: Harry meets Fawkes, who trills a short note to convey information. Harry, in turn, is filled with a sense of possible danger and urgency, courage, or something else along those lines.

 

One of mine is when Harry develops some super ability after being imprisioned in Azkaban, because being miserable allows you to develop an affinity to dementors, wandless magic and raise your magical core's power level to over 9000.

 

You must be talking about when Harry gets a sharingan, a blond wig, and suddenly starts screaming believe it at the top of his voice.

 

That's a thing? Seriously?

There're thousands of HPxNaruto crossovers and perhaps half a dozen good ones. It's like a goldmine of pet peeves.

 

I know that there is one where Harry gets a sharingan in Azkaban... but I'm sure there has to be one out there somewhere where Harry turns into Naruto.

 

I know the first one, once you get past the sheer amount of angst in the first chapter it's a good read. Those that Harry turns into Naruto, though...

Can we take a moment to think about just how fucked up this actually is.

 

Reading a conversation and instead of words the author uses numbers.

"What about the other 2?"

"I hate those 3."


That is just beyond lazy.

In english language you capitalize names so when I see things like:

'Harry potter' or 'James and lily'

I get angry.

Funny addendum: In german you have to capitalize shitton of things, so german authors have hard time ignoring that habit.

 

Going back to the Animagus part, it grates me how it usually plays no real role in the story besides showing how awesome those characters are. If it played a meaningful role in the story (like to defeat the villain or allow crucial character development), that would be one thing. But how often does that happen?

Actually, I'll take that back: I can think of one story that did it reasonably well, in the Stranger in an Unholy Land series. Harry spends ages developing the ability, only fully transforms in a crucial plot moment, and while it is a phoenix even then there is a moment where it genuinely weakens him. But other than that, it only serves as a check-list for Harry being awesome and the author's wish-fulfilment.

 

I have seen one story where Ron became a tiger or a panther or something and in the final battle of Hogwarts used it to tear death eaters apart.

 

If it's a number below ten then I agree with you. If it's between ten and one hundred then I'm 50/50. But any number above that and I prefer it to be in actual numbers.

 

Not related to HP, but an author over on Spacebattles keeps writing crossover stories where Earth humans meet another race. It wouldn't be bad except for the fact the author keeps making these horribly cringe-worthy plots lines where Earth humans encounter a unisex toilet and freak out.

So far he has SG1 going to another planet and then trying to use their toilet before freaking out and being confused by a unisex toilet, and another where nBSG finds a derelict Earth ship and going into this spiel about how it's weird Earth ships have two sets of toilets.

It's just so completely unnecessary to the plot and cringe-worthy.
