Also, CI by Rep is short story, where the relationship is the story, which is quite different than epic multi world tale based on some inane chocolate shopping.

Just the other day, I was talking to a friend of mine who, it turns out, actually likes Methods of Rationality. I'm still trying to figure out how any reasonably educated person who knows the first thing about Harry Potter could possibly enjoy reading that, thing. Did they forget that much about the original source material, are they unaware of legitimately good fanfics, what?

 

I see where you're coming from, but at the same time... meh. It's entirely subjective. You can say a fic is horrible all you want, but it's not like your opinion on it makes it objectively horrible. Personally, there are tons of things I like that a lot of others would look down.

And while I don't like MoR, I can understand why someone else might.

 

Most people do in fact have only vague memories of the original stories and nave never read any HP fanfic.

 

If we're going to get into Pet Peeves for people then we'll be here for days.

MOR has always seemed like the kind of story that people like Sheldon Cooper would like. But, it's people's choices what they do and do not like. Some people like the angst genre with stories about abused Harry becuase they can identify with him, they like stories about Super!Harry because it gives them a feeling of empowerment, etc.

If you cleaned up all technical mistakes such as spelling, grammar, punctuation and whatnot then every single fanfiction will have at least a few people that like it. The original books appealed to the masses while the majority of Fanfiction is more for a niche market.

 

Unlike the author of MOR, Sheldon has actually read the books.

 

Pretty much any story where poor, dead, died-for-their-son, James and Lily (singly or collectively) are not Harry's real parents.

I just can't help but feel like it's one of the biggest 'Fuck you's in HP fic.

Ok, I get it. Just because I despise something doesn't mean other people should despise it too.

With that said, Fics that treat children like adults and the adults like children. It's annoying reading about "kids" doing whatever the hell they want without the "adults" doing anything meaningful to reign them in.

 

Crossover meta.

Just read a nBSG crossover where the Fleet finds 20 minutes into the future Earth. Completely ruined it at the end of a reasonably good first chapter by having someone from the NSA make the connection between the nBSG ships in orbit and the TV series.

It's not "finds 20 minutes into the future" + Earth, it's finds + "20 minutes into the future Earth".
Another way of saying it is "finds Earth 20 minutes into the future".

Indeed, melon is quite often used as breast size indicator.

 

I'll bet if you look hard enough you can find a sex scene referred to as a banana. I have never really felt a need to worry about why an author refers to sex as a fruit.
