You know I got that same impression, but I wanted to see if it was just confirmation bias. Looking on Ao3 because it's easier to search, for all works tagged the Force Awakens it's 49% slash. Of the remaining half, a quarter is Ren/Rey, and something like 10% is Poe/Finn/Rey. It's a little unfortunate.

 

I'll take het pairings. Ren/Rey can be done very well I suspect.

 

I have zero interest in Ren/Rey or any of the other major pairings. If I wanted romance I'd be reading something else.

 

And not all Ao3 stories correctly mark their slash as such.

 

When I think about what I want from Star Wars... romance has to be really close to dead last.

I finally got around to watching the Last Jedi. In the handful of years since Episode VII dropped, has any good fanfiction emerged from the new series?

C'mon, there's bound to be at least one that isn't a Hux/Ren slash shipfic or a real-world AU Rey/Ren.

Nope. Star Wars is mostly dead as a fandom, as unbelievable as that sounds. I'm still astounded how Disney managed to destroy one of the most beloved IPs in modern culture practically overnight. It's honestly kinda impressive.

 

Kinda? I mean, the prequel movies weren't particularly good, but people were still super excited to see them, and every one's release was a major cultural touchstone.

The prequels were certainly the beginning of the decline of Star Wars, don't get me wrong, but they were a gentle slope leading up to the sheer cliff that is Disney's efforts with the IP.

 

The new movies makes me not mind dear old Jar Jar.
