Is it just me, or have all the Azkaban fics just disappeared? I checked around in the library - the last new story was posted in June (1/2 a year ago)! And other than Shezzy88's story (which isn't a true Azkaban fic), I can't think of any fics that are being updated currently. It's been months since I've seen an Azkaban fic on fanfiction.net.

Seems like the genre's all washed out.

Not a complaint or a request for a fic, mind you. Just an observation.

I think its more of finding a decent one that isn't overloaded with cliche's and such.

No, the trend has gone into regression, which is a good thing, it means that author's can think over idea's for that genre` and create good stories, instead of rehashing the same ideas over and over again.

    Just updated today:

Harry Potter and the Realization of Fate by meurysan reviews

Harry Potter is thrown into Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. A mysterious new wizard appears and puts the Ministry, the Order and Voldemort on the defensive. Harry escapes but is it too late for him? What will he do once he is proven innocent? W
    Harry Potter - Fiction Rated: M - English - Action/Adventure/Romance - Chapters: 21 - Words: 176327 - Reviews: 691 - Updated: 12-14-06 - Published: 5-5-05

I just found it in my ff.net profile this morning. I dunno why it is there as I can't remember I ever had a look at it. Sometimes I add stories to my favorites which look promising but I never start to actually read them.

There are very few other stories, one combines Azkaban and Time-Travel, but overall it seems the Azkaban theme is replaced by the scavenger hunt.

Dark minion. Unless you are a h/g shipper get rid of that. It's h/g. I ought to know.

Though I like Azkaban stories. They need to be more original. So I agree with Surrarin. I just wish the author's think in over-drive someone posts again.

He doesn't need to get rid of that link, it was a valid response to this thread, it was updated the same day that the thread was created thus proving that all Azkaban fics are not dead. H/G isn't banned from this site, just frowned upon. Thanks for the link Minion.

The same thing is starting to happen to the time-travel fics. Eventually the craze will wind down and maybe some with new material might pop up once in a while.

That being said, I should probably update my own...

There's only so many Azkaban and Time!Travel idea's you can spawn, before you're pretty much spraying someone else's shitty idea with Febreeze in the hopes that it smells a little bit nicer.

I don't really mind the Azkaban fics if only they didn't all fall down the same path.

    1. Harry wrongly accused of something.

    2. His friends, family, mentors, brothers, sisters and even his 'Dream Team' consisting of Alan Dershowitz, F. Lee Bailey, Johnnie L. Cochran, Gerald Uleman, Robert Kardashian, Carl Douglas, Skip Taft, Robert Blazier, Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld all abandoned him without even trying to help him find the truth. (Which is surprising for his Dream Team.)

    3. Breaks free, either because of a sudden increase in power for no real reason, because the 'least-likely' person helps him, or sometimes both.

    4. He's on a vengeful warpath. Or he's out to hunt who put him there.

    5. Everyone either suddenly comes to grips and believes him to be innocent, or he just kills them in an over the top psycho fashion.

As far as Time Travel is concerned, well it does get hard to constantly remake the 'I'm going back to change everything' idea.

Granted there are some exceptions to the rule, but those are few and far between, Not every Azkaban or Time Travel story is bad, it's just not always original anymore and I think the craze for them is starting to die out because of this.

There are only so many original ideas and cliche free harry potter fics people can think of. Nothing can last forever. Thats why i wrote like three really different and uniqe challanges for harry potter.

Challenges are unique and different pretty easily. It's when you actually get into the story that becomes the problem. The most original idea in the world can quickly become cliche' in the way it is presented.

Unless of course it's an Amerision challenge, otherwise it's a god damn story in of itself. :p

Avitus I was telling him to get rid of the link from his favorites. I read that fic so I know it's h/g and was telling him to get rid of it if he wasn't a h/g shipper.

Oujou : 2 years back Harry!heir of Gryffindor was the most amazing most original idea that happened to HP!fandom. In a few months Thal's idea is going to become cliche, with the Red-head thrown in ofcourse (then it will have Harry feeling sorry how he raped women and a Necro scene will follow ....).

Uh...got carried awa a bit. But yeah.

The reason why Azkaban fics are disappearing is 'cos it never really was a proper genre - just a plot bunny that got used so much that it was considered a genre by many.

But if you want a new take on it, I made a challenge a while back that you might be interested in:

Now I know why I never read that fic. Not because of H/G, but because of it's cliches.

First chapter contains the usual Voldemort setup (Percy dead), his dream team turns away etc.

Second chapter: Gringotts, Weasleys got his trust vault, but it's only an infinitesimal tiny bit of his fortune ...

Third chapter: Ginny believes him innocent, trust vault closed ...

Fourth chapter: Remus believes him innocent, ....

    You get the picture.

But I think it's one of the better cliché fics out there. Nothing I'd recommend here, but if someone seeks desperately for something to read ...

You wound me Nexus! I don't want my story to become cliche! >_<

But it's true, whether it happens to my idea or another, whenever someone writes an idea that people fall in love with plan on seeing a dozen spin offs of that idea. The dozens from those, so on and so forth.

two questions then. What was the first Azkaban story, and have there ever been any where Harry was actually guilty? That would make for a good DLP story if the right author picked it up.

Don't wuvy Thally I will still lurve yours the mostest.

    Crim : 1> Nobody knows.
2> Yes, Azkaban!Harry has been exploited quite a lot. If the genre was a woman I'd say she was gang banged badly.

But most of them almost always end up with either Harry killing everybody or reconciling with everybody and ending up with Ginny.

There are quite a few fics published before or in 2002 (mostly unfinished, I think), already based on the actual clichés - betrayal, Fudge/Percy getting rid of him, etc.

The fics, which had a lot of influence and inspired the genre (yeah, I think it is a genre):
    When Darkness Falls published 2002 - 2005
    Betrayed 2003 - 2005
The Lord of Azkaban 2005 - 2006 in ff.net but I believe to remember it was also started 2003 or so.

And I've seen some 'modern' authors, who claim to write in the tradition of nonjon's story:
Harry Potter and the Freedom of Apathy published March 30, 2005. I wonder if it was also a repost and originally posted way earlier - but I think it is already one of the 'newer' Azkaban stories. - Nonjon?

There are also some in which he is guilty, but I can't remember the titles or content, so it's probably not the best stuff out there.

A different take on the theme took Rorschach after a long look at his blots:
Lord of Caer Azkaban 2004 - (wip)
Also several newer authors claim to be inspired by him.

I went looking and the earliest I could find was When Darkness Falls and Fixing Broken Glass- YamiPaladinOfChaos (but it's a h/g with all that has become the usual cliche.)

There are some stories started earlier than that.

This is the first completed story I found, but didn't read it yet.
Harry Potter, Prisoner of Azkaban, published Feb - March 2001.
    8 chapters, 45k words, ends as H/G

Then there are some unfinished like this:
    No Title Yet published 02-17-02.
2 chapters, 800 words, already some of the cliches,

And, of course, there is this one:
    Fade To Black by IceFire
*D/H Slash* Draco and Harry are in Azkaban as Death Eaters? Percy, Percy, Percy, what *were* you thinking? But when Draco's friend from Hogwarts who is now working for the Daily Prophet is assigned to cover their trial, things get rather twisted....

Er, I don't think that HoG!Harry was ever not cliché. I joined . . . er . . . around two and a half years ago, to FFN, and HoG fiction was already pretty cliché to people. It just seems like the obvious next step. It was cliché to me before I found fanfiction.
