I was wondering what anyone thought of this movie coming out.

It looks like Sin City on steroids, but considering it's based on a graphic novel also by Frank Miller, that seems like a given.:D

The soundtrack is both awesome and appropriate.

Apart from the fact that the place looks more like Mordor than Sparta. Interesting movie. I hope it comes to my hometown or anywhere in this state.

I know peoples who have seen it, and ITS AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS!!!

One of my friends said, "Best action/war movie I've ever seen."

It knocked off Gladiator, which used to hold that spot with my friend (Jeremy). Anyway he said, "Like the Matrix meets Gladiator," So...

    I'M SUPER PUMPED!! :D :D

Anyways, yeah I'll be at the theater on 3-8-07 waiting for the opening show of 12:01.

Is it based on the battle of Thermopylae? I studied it in Classics, 300 Spartans hold the pass against the whole Persian army only to be betrayed by some of the locals? Shows how a defensive position was invaluable back then, plus the fact that Sparta was the most warlike state in Greece at that point.

Oh! If they mention Greece at all in the film, shout at it, becuase there was no fucking Greece back then! Closest you'd get is the Delian League/Athenian Empire, which was around at that time but the Spartans were not part of it.

Xerxes looks like Apophis and some Persian warriors resemble Uruk-hai.

I don't like Gerard Butler that much, but Leonidas' expressions are great. Not overly manifold, but great.

The trailer really looks promising. There must be a reason it's R rated - if it's not rated only because of the bare masculine breasts or Xerxes' underwear. But then, it's a US-rating.

Yeah, based on a comic of Frank Miller who retold the events based on Herodot.

There was. Not a united Greece, but the Hellenoi - the Greek - saw themselves as one 'folk' with some panhellenian elements, i.e. the language, the gods, the Olympic games, Homer's Ilias, which they believed to be historical fact as first panhellenic war, etc.

At the end of the War, there was a 'Union of Hellenoi' against the barbaroi (the Persians). To unite against the barbaroi is one theme of the comic (but I never read it).

Thermopylae is one of my favorite historical battles. King Leonidas gave the single best call to battle in history, "Μολὼν λαβέ" (pro. Molon Labe, "Come get some!").

I liked the comic book version, and am looking forward to the film.

It looks amazing but I think people have to realize, its based off of a comic which is based off of a movie (The 300 Spartans) and that is based off of historical events. So I doubt historically its going to be all that accurate.

Nonetheless, I think I'll actually be going to the theaters to see this movie and I haven't done that in a long time.

I haven't read the comic myself yet - but it is said to be based quite accurate on the History of Herodot, not on the other movie.

The film is not historically accurate - he can't be as we don't know enough for a detailed reconstruction (i.e. not the Spartans, but only the kings claimed to descend from Heracles, and the number of Persian soldiers is heavily discussed - several modern scholars reject the ancient figures as huge exaggeration)

But then I don't mind how accurate it really is, as long as the reference to antiquity isn't just riddikulus. I don't want to see a historically accurate reconstruction, I want to see Spartans massacring thousands of Persians, I want to see another battle like Helm's Deep without annoying Orlando Bloom, I want to see an epic ancient battlefield without blueeyed blonde poofter Achilles Brat Pit.

And at the moment I think the film will meet my claims.

How odd considering your current avatar is from the comic. Email me if you're interested in a copy of the books.

    Agreed and merged.

Nytmare, try at least checking the first page (it was only 3/4 of the way down) before posting. Actually, you should probably check more than that but still.

    And good eye DLR.

As for the movie? Looks great visually. The history will undoubtedly be twisted towards a Hollywood touch (as I'm guessing the graphic novel was also slanted some). Simply because the history from that long ago is incapable of being terribly accurate. But it looks cool as hell.
