He probably meant situation when the book, not the series, adapted was not finished. That said there was a situation like that with Scott Pilgrim. The movie was in a production when the sixth book was being finished. The comic managed to arrive three weeks before the film though.

As for the news, well, it is rather disappointing, but not completely unexpected. The book probably will arrive this year or at the beginning of the next because as bad as GRRM is with estimating his writing he would not believed he can deliver it within few months if there was more than 1/5 to be done. As for spoilers, The Winds of Winter and the sixth season may not be the most problematic with all the changes in the show (aside from likely confirming R+L=J), but since they said the ending will be the same, even if the journey will be different, the readers will have much more problem with the GoT final season in 2018.

As disappointed as I am that Winds is not at borderline completion, I'm hoping I might enjoy the show more because of it. The Hardhome episode blew me away last season; I liked that single moment more than any other moment in the show / books. Perhaps that's what every episode of S6 will be for me without book foreknowledge.

Hey, I've got a question. Since GRRM is against fanfiction, why is there still ASOIAF fanfictions? Someone made an argument for GOT not falling under GRRMs authority but there Fanfiction.net has two distinct categories, one for ASOIAF and one for GOT.

Are there not any legal ramifications for this or have I missed something?

There aren't any legal ramifications because he hasn't acted upon this opinion yet. Yes, he has said that, but it doesn't mean anything until it is brought before a court (where I believe it would have some effect on any defense an author could make).

His consent or lack thereof doesn't automatically make fan fiction legal or illegal - if Rowling suddenly decides she doesn't want fan fiction anymore, it won't disappear overnight. But if she starts acting upon that than it is likely fan fiction would disappear very quickly, through a combination of the site managers and the authors not wanting to fight it.

Thousand years? Not really. Dragons were a thing just 150 years ago and everyone is aware of that. They even have skulls that prove just how big they could get.

As for magic itself, it's not like people suddenly stopped believing in it even if it was less present than before. Only handful of sceptics had serious doubts about it.

I figured it would be most likely in the realm of hundreds instead of thousands, but I decided to quote the message unaltered.

I always had the impression that people in that world are practical to an almost ridiculous point. In addition, I'd say that everyone seems to accept the existence of magic... while assuming it's something they won't run into directly often enough to worry about.

Saw a shadow kill a man? Well that doesn't make any fucking sense, but I saw it happen, so I guess that's a thing now. /move on with life.

Dragons? Yeah those were a thing in my great grandfather's time, but someone killed them all. /shrug. What's that you say? Someone hatched some? Well that has the potential to shake things up in a bad way, but I'm not surprised... also I'll believe it when I see it.

I read something about Fairy Tales once that always fit for GoT/ASoIaF regarding magic. I can't find it right now, which is irritating, but it was about how 'Fairy Tales' used to be thought true in some cases. People actually believed that a monster might live in the bog, because everyone who went in there died, and so they avoided it.

In GoT/ASoIaF there actually is a monster in the bog, or at least there used to be. So a current monster popping up somewhere else isn't something to get overly worked up about - you just don't go in there.

That made no sense, I'm sure.

TL;DR - I like the low key yet dangerous and present way that ASoIaF/GoT handles magic. I think it makes sense in-universe.

My take on the situation is that magic /magical occurrences have been happening on the DL all over the world since time immemorial, so the idea of magic has never really left the public consciousness. There were periods when magic had been prevalent (Age of Heroes, Valyrian Freehold) and periods where magic dwindled into obscurity (post Aegon's Landing to birth of Dany's dragons), but it's never completely disappeared.

A nice parallel to the real world is slavery. Slavery was a global reality 100+ years ago, we're still dealing with the repercussions, we know it still exists in the shittier regions of the world, and it occasionally interjects into our daily lives in the form of human trafficking rings discovered in the basements of our neighborhood laundromats. And yet, despite this, we get on with the day-to-day as best we can.

Game of Thrones Season 6: Inside GoT — The Best Seat in the House.

After the first teaser I had my suspicions, but by now I'm pretty sure that HBO is just messing with the show's fans for lulz. I fully expect that the first trailer, whenever it's going to be released, will include 90% of footage from the earlier seasons and just one scene from the new one. ;)

Or they'll go the route of teasers and just do vague weirdness with voiceovers.

I will be hyped either way. I'm really looking forward to being continuously surprised this season without book spoilers.

I'm just hoping they have less deux ex diabola twists. There's only so many sudden villain victories I can take.

That's the thing, the villain victories aren't really sudden. GoT and ASOIAF both drop tons of hints before the villains win, it's just that they're very subtle and we're conditioned to believe that things will always work out for the protagonist. By removing the option of 'this is only a temporary setback' as a safe harbor for when things don't work out, Martin has successfully turned that annoying trope upside down.

Then again, I also love watching Our Lord and Savior Ramsey Bolton in his march to triumph (even knowing that it won't end well for him.)

All I want for Christmas is for posts like this one, which add nothing to the conversation, to be replaced by posts like this one which engage in a conversation.
