Episode VIII began filming recently and they put out this little production announcement, so I thought I'd start a thread for it. Director is Rian Johnson (who directed Looper), and new cast members are Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.

The movie's not coming out until next year, but we've had threads for movies with a longer wait so I figured why not just make one for news and discussion until then.

One rumor I've heard so far is that the subtitle might be "The Knights of Ren," which sounds cool, though who knows if it's true or not yet.

Didn't like Godzilla 2014, liked Looper. I suppose time will tell.

Godzilla was done by Gareth Edwards (2010 Monsters) Just thought to clear that up.

The director of Godzilla, Gareth Edwards, is directing Rogue One, the other upcoming star wars film.

Looper was really nice. I actually liked Star Wars VII, even though it did have a somewhat unoriginal plot. I'm curious to learn more about Snosk (not sure what his name was again) and perhaps see a bit of Ren's "training" with him.

Monsters is one of my most favorite movies of all time.

Hm, maybe I should give Godzilla another chance then...

And maybe we'll find out what Ren's surname is. I have a feeling its probably conected to some known jedi. Read some interveiw where they pretty much confirmed that they whitheld her last name for very spesific reasons.

    You mean Rey, right?

    She's obviously Yoda's kid.

    yesssss hahaha

I assumed that the next film will skip past a lot of Ren's training (but feature Rey's as a focal point), and I just realized that I'd love it if the main threads of the plot are the training of Rey and Ren by their respective masters, we'd get tons of new philosophy for both sides of the Force which I'd love.

I could totally get behind this a movie where the Ewoks reveal that they've spent the last 30 years using the empire tech left over from Episode VI to create their own terrifying cute-armada. With C-3PO as their god-general.

And yes I'm aware this will probably not be a popular opinion.

I saw a preview somewhere for the season 2 finale of rebels. Guess who shows up?

Darth fucking Maul. As some sort of exiled dark side Yoda figure, no less.

I mean, I knew he was supposed to still be kicking around after Clone Wars... but that whole deal could have easily been ignored by Disney and left as "Legends". What with Ahsoka, Hondo, and Rex becoming main recurring chars in the show, it seems like they're trying to bring most of the Clone Wars material back into established canon (which is fine by me; Ahsoka is a BAMF)

    Thus rises another Snoke candidate?

The Clone Wars was the only thing besides the movies that was left as canon when Disney took over, they don't have to bring it back into canon.

Also most people probably just watch the movies and do go into the side stuff, so I doubt they'll make Maul into Snoke when the vast majority of people saw him get cut in half in Episode I. They'd probably think it was an asspull to say Snoke was a guy everyone thought died sixty years ago in-universe.

How could Darth Maul be alive? In Episode 1 he got himself chopped in half and tossed down the reactor. I can't say I've ever watched the animated series but that seems pretty far out about him coming back from exile.

I still believe that Snoke and Darth Plageus are the same guy.

I haven't watched the Clone Wars series, but I think Maul is there, with mecha-legs.

It's actually not a huge stretch canonically. His rage and anger and power kept him alive, just like it kept Vader alive on Mustafar. Surviving potentially fatal wounds BTDS (Because the Dark Side) is one of the older Star Wars conventions.

What really stretches belief is how, after Mother Talzin (his momma) uses magicky force mumbo jumbo to fully resurrect him and restore his body, he goes toe-to-toe with Sidious on multiple occasions and comes away alive each time.
