I gotta say, I don't get the point of the trash bin, other than to point and laugh at stories. Which is peculiar, because the really low ranked stories are deleted. So . . . why do we allow the only mediocre, substandard, or well-written albeit clichéd fics to be maligned so? If it was, say, a GAFF-type forum, I'd understand, but . . .

This is especially confusing to me because clearly readable fics, and fics that I, and many others, love, (such as Resonance and Revolutions) have been consigned to the trash bin.

    Any comments?

Majority rated the stories you approve of low, that is why those fics are in the trash bin. Also, if a particular fic's rating rises while it is in the Trash Bin, it is moved to the library. I think only truly horrendous fics are deleted, the rest are given a chance to make a come back.

Redemption can be found in many places, including fanfiction.

The trash bin serves two purposes:

    1. Fics that some members like, but that the general populace of the site deem unworthy of the main library are kept there for the sake of the minority.

    2. It allows us to keep an eye on those fics that only just missed getting into the library, in case they improve.

Perhaps calling it the "Trash" is a bit of a misnomer; but that's the way it is.

Considering that many of the fics in the trash bin have ratings of four, I'm somewhat dubious. From the first page,

    Resonance
    Ginny's Potion Woes
Harry Potter and the Eagle of Truthiness (Maybe this one SHOULD be in the trash bin, but still.)
Harry Potter and the Rise of the Amphiptere
Harry Potter and the Giant Squid
    Altered Destinies

Will all of these be moved back into the Library? Or just rot?

EDIT: I posted this before I read Taure's post. Thank you for the clarification. Is there any possibility of it being renamed? I honestly went there expecting to find Tara's My Immortal, and found, instead, fics like HP & the Rise of the Amphiptere, which has anachronisms, and too short chapters, but could definitely become a good fic. Could it be arranged for it to be renamed? Maybe . . . "Waiting" or something.

I think renaming the Trash Bin is probably the admin's call. Seeing the forum belongs to them, but I do agree one would expect things like My Immortal in a Trash Bin.

But, if you've been on the forum a bit you realize what the bin actually is, no biggy.

I wouldn't be so sure. I read through the thread on Lord Supremo's Harry potter and the Amphiptere, and he was quite dismayed to see that his story was in the trash bin. He has been a member since December.

I think it is more than just the title 'Trash Bin.' The forum description of 'Unrecommended fics or fics of horrible quality. Read at risk to your own sanity.' It sort of gives the impression that fics like My Immortal should be there.

Besides, some of the stories in the Trash are well loved by some and hated by others. And it could be that some stories are reviewed by people who don't enjoy that sort of thing and that's why it achieves a low rating.

Urgh. What I'm trying to say that the Reviews Section doesn't have consistence in all cases, though to be fair, it usually get's it spot on unless people act like idiots...(*Cough*Xiph0*Cough*)

Well, I've got a fic in the trash bin so I'll toss out my opinion. It's just misunderstood, Ginny's Potion Woes is in good company but it just wasn't up to the standards we like around here. If another of my fics found it's way there, (or just got deleted) I understand it's nothing personal, there are standards to be upheld if we want to maintain our reputation as elitist pricks and xenophobic snobs.

Ok here is the story of the "Trash Bin".

As DLP's membership started to boom our library was becoming inundated with ridiculous "Trash" stories. Rather than delete them thread by thread (which would have led to many re-postings of the same drivel) the Admins came up with a system to put fics that didn't belong in the Library where they did belong: The Trash Bin (it's like the New Jersey of the DLP forum).

Now New Jersey, like the Trash Bin has some places that people like (Long Beach Island), and they're entitled to liking those places; but most of New Jersey, like the Trash Bin, is made up of the Newarks and Camdens and Trentons of Fanfiction.

So DLP, like Pennsylvania, lets it's members visit the Trash Bin (otherwise known as New Jersey), but reminds them that when they go there they are more likely to find garbage than a nice summer vacation spot.

I am all for re-naming the Trash Bin "New Jersey", because it will get the message across just as well, but I think that LINKed and some of our other Jersey-Pride People might be upset.

I understand the Trash Bin's intentions, and realize that the system isn't perfect per se. But it serves its purpose. Though, I wonder if my opinion would change should any of my own fics end up there. Harr.

I'd support that. I mean, Jersey mostly sucks, but they DO have Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Kevin Smith, and Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.

EDIT: And, of course, as previously mentioned, the Jersey Shore.

But despite ATHF, Kevin Smith, Harold & Kumar, and the Jersey Shore (which is getting to be pretty nasty) would you actually want to live there?

I mean seriously? Who the hell would want to live in America's asshole besides Jim McGreevey?

EDIT: And now that I think about it, I think Jim wanted America to be living in his asshole -- not the other way around.

And Kevin Smith. Um . . . well, I suppose the rent is cheaper than NYC, and it doesn't smell nasty like Philly- oh wait, it's worse. Uh . . . well . . . they have good public schools, so I suppose . . . no one.

    NJ! Sucks.

The rent in a hotel where everything is made of gold is cheaper than the rent in NYC, so that reasoning gets you nowhere :)

Philly doesn't smell nasty unless you go into the wrong part of the Italian (now Korean) market.

I'm sorry, I missed the memo that said Camden/Newark had good public schools :)

Agreed. Just like the stuff in the Trash Bin :)

I love how Gio ended his post by steering everything back on topic.

But...back to NJ. Yeah it sucks. I will definitely get out of here soon. Can't wait till College!

As for the Trash Bin, I barely go in there, and I think some of the stories that were placed in there were rightly so.

Actually, NJ has some of the best public schools in the nation. I was looking up average levels of education in the U.S., in order to compare them to the murder capital of the world-- Kingston, 109/100,000 chance you'll get murdered every year, or something. Anyways, NJ has around 9k per student for the school on average across the state. Alternately, in a county a few miles away from my home, (maybe 30?) Lower Merion, they have 17k per student for the school. The premier public school in Philly, alternately, has 1k per student. . . . See any disparities?
