People still trust Joe's promises? After all this time?

I don't know how you do it, Joe, but you're not fooling me. Not again.

Don't trust Joe to write, kids. It doesn't end well.

And this, my friends, proves Joe is a good fiction author. In real life... I don't miss. ;)

There's barely enough passable harry/fleur fics as is, I don't see the point of adding another one to the shit heap when there is plenty of room for actual good stories.

    I think that's a great premise for a crack!fic. For a real fic? nope.

I kind of thought you were going Crack!fic with that post.

I did it! I very very quickly wrote it as a one shot. Enjoy! View here.

It's full of cliches and probably sucks but I'm of the speed at which I accomplished this. I hope someone gets some kind of enjoyment out of it.

If that's what it takes to get an update to Magician, I'd take it.

Yeah that was the general idea, for the most part. Harry as a wand for hire. There's something there - see if the outline will allow for it. Cheers.

I'd say no, because according to lore, you'll have people trying to murder Harry to get the wand. In canon at least, Dumbledore and Grindelwald were probably the two most powerful wizards in their generation, with or without the wand. Same is true for Voldemort (again, for his generation), which is why they weren't dealing with oncomers every week. Harry? Not so much—unless you want to make him as powerful as them. Again, at least in my head-canon, the very fact you have the wand brings unwelcomed enemies.

So, if Harry's trying to escape that life and darkness, why would he bring along the item that would attract that very thing like a magnet?

I still think giving him some training post-Hogwarts, and then having him give it all up is a better route if he's going the "I want a different lifestyle" route.

Perhaps that's the story, though? Harry's a legend in his own time - he wants to escape that, but the hero's mantle is bolted to his shoulders through the trial and circumstance of his Hogwarts years.

Is the dealing with challengers thing a negative? Isn't that some good story? Harry isn't the most powerful wizard in the world, but he's got that air about him. Defeated a Dark Lord, survived all the shit he's survived, master of the Elder Wand.

It'd be exactly like when professional fighters get challenged in pubs by drunk morons, I'd say. For the most part, the challengers are going to get the ass handed to them. But, and you'll like this bit :p, Harry isn't unarmed. Moreover, he can just walk away.

I think he'd bring the wand along - or, perhaps, have his original as primary wand and the Elder Wand secured away - because he feels a responsibility for its protection. In DH he snapped it, but would that stop people come looking if they knew he'd had it? Would they believe he destroyed it? Perhaps that's part of the story, too. He claims it's destroyed, and he's not entirely believed.

Edit: Also, what the shit, brah?

I've shat near-on 1.6 million words into Harry Potter fanfiction. You'll be fooled. You'll be fooled and you'll like it.

He only snapped it in the movies. In the books, he put it back into Dumbledore's grave.

Or are you saying that he snapped it in DH period just like the movies in the story?

No, no. I had my movies and books crossed there. Cheers.

So if Harry doesn't die a natural death, the wand will take a new master. Still a solid reason for ambitious if not misguided people to challenge him.

Perhaps Fleur, even. She's employed by some sort of French special operations to retrieve and secure powerful magical artifacts, and so needs to get close to Harry... Lot of paths this story could take.

I will not be fooled because I will know that while you may sing your siren's song, only disappointment and death will await me if I let myself be swayed away.

    Ahh,

I thought you were going the "a little above average Harry just wants to get away from it all" route. IMO, a super-powered Harry will be naturally more appealing to Fleur (or anyone else), which takes some of the charm out of Harry/Fleur stories for me. Dealing with challengers isn't a bad thing, I just think there's more ways to do it than just "I want your wand." Wait . . . that sounds bad. Er, just read on.

Although not told in so in canon, I think it safe to assume Harry's pretty much a known name around the Commonwealth at least. Doubly so after he defeats Voldemort for good. I can see wizards trying to take Harry on all the time, just to see how they measure up to the "Slayer of Voldemort." Hell, he works as a chef, but is also the guy who comes out from the kitchen to kick out drunken patrons who are out of control. Lots of drunken challenges, and even a few sober ones.

Dunno, just can't explain properly why I dislike the whole "Elder wand" idea. Maybe because, as I've said before, if he's trying to get away from that world, why would he bring the very item that would attract so many? It also seems to cut against Harry's personality—he seldom feels the attraction to power that seems associated to the Elder wand (again, Voldemort, Grindelwald, Dumbledore, etc., all showed this in one way or another).

Now, if Harry hid it, or destroyed it, even, but people keep coming after him for the wand, that's a different story. Maybe the murders happen because someone's trying to force his hand into picking the wand back up, only he doesn't have it, or can't get it.

As to Fleur - I'd rather see her with neutral reasons for coming to Harry, rather than negative ones. Say, for instance, a murder happened on land associated with Gringotts (a sister-bank in Australia? Or an area where people are curse-breaking like Bill in Egypt?). Fleur's sent to investigate since it was done by a curse. She pops in on Harry just as he's smacking down another half-drunk patron babbling on about the Elder wand and challenging Harry.

Hearing it, and knowing the history, gets her curiosity going. Maybe she even thinks he might have been the murderer for a while.

I guess, as I write this, I just see the Elder Wand as too convenient a plot device, and again, not exactly within Harry's character (unless he's hidden it to keep it safe).

Now . . . if you want to put laser sights on the Elder Wand for better accuracy, I might be interested. :p

Heh - no, I'm not doing a super-powered Harry. I think it safe to say I've tread that ground and salted the soil in my wake.

But a Harry that's been through the shit? A Harry not afraid to fight, or even get hurt? That puts him ahead of most pretenders, most challengers. He's not super powered, but he is willing to act. Because it's all he's known. Through trial, prophecy, circumstance - it's what he knows. That alone is the edge in any fight.

I think I may be edging toward the 'hidden to keep it safe' angle. The Elder Wand is too flashy, too shiny. Harry's put it away - but then we've got that worst kept secret angle.

I guess what I'm looking for is a proper story for a post-Deathly Hallows (without the epilogue and a few other salient details) that doesn't necessarily introduce a new world-ending Big Bad, and could legitimately push Harry/Fleur together. A story that doesn't have earth-shattering consequences, but local and character-driven consequences.

And, please, laser sights? Whatever happened to shooting from the hip like a real man? In my opinion Vernon had the most effective wand in the series:

It's not hard to work around the hiding it in Dumbledore's tomb bit. IIRC Dumbledore was buried at Hogwarts, so all it would take is one idiot causing a ruckus there trying to get at it for Harry to decide maybe it's better not to hide in a school and take it with him.

Honestly, I think the whole thing is too convoluted.

You think if Harry should have the Elder Wand or not is too difficult or complex to follow?

Edit: I'm being a touch facetious - better question: What is too convoluted? Attempting to map a fic based upon the Harry/Fleur theme that's original - where did I lose you?

I like the idea of people coming after Harry for the elder wand... The idea of him actually having it? Not so much. That was one of the big takeaways at the end of DH. It would be ooc for Harry to hold on to it.

The original avenue of Harry just chilling after the war is a good one imo without needing him to have ulterior motives like being an unspeakable or an undercover auror.

Now what has happened is it has been a few years since DH and Harry has been living a peaceful and idyllic life when one day an assassin or something tracks him down. Harry subdues him and during the interrogation he finds that he is being targeted for the elder wand.
Someone out there believes he has it. But why now after all these years is the question. Is it a new dark lord making a bid for power? Or a misguided fool spreading rumors without considering the consequences?
These questions force Harry to come out of 'retirement' and now he's back to doing doing what he does best.

Harry did what he was supposed to at the end of DH kept the Elder wand in Dumbledore's grave. Except the original grave was defiled by Voldemort. So in his wisdom Harry shifted his body to another location hidden under Fidelius or something where he also hid the wand. The original grave meanwhile still serves its purpose of being the final resting place of Dumbledore... In the public eye anyway.

If Harry's understanding of magic that he displayed throughout DH is incorporated into the story you won't need to go out of your way to make a badass Harry. He would already rival Dumbledore in that regard. I'm certain a way can be found to incorporate Fleur into the story.
