How do you imagine wand holsters?

Except Hermione was tucking her time turner away. The one who pulled a wand from his robes neck was Harry. Not saying that Hermione or other witches wouldn't use such an advantage but Rowling steered clear of anything that might be construed as sexual as far as I can recall. Outside of the Veela and even then their aura is greatly overstated in fanon compared to what it actually was.

For my part, getting back on subject, I never liked the idea of wand holsters and all the other ideas people had about how to store the wand as flawlessly as possible so the characters could never lose their wand. Those sorts of things really irritate me. If there were special holsters that make it impossible for people to disarm, summon or whatever your wand, I'm sure that everyone would be using them, not just Harry and co.

But there aren't so losing your wand is a serious problem in canon because without one, a wizard's basically useless (except for animagi and the ability to apparate). It makes Harry's choice of disarming people a tactically sound move, since the recovery time from stunners (which seems entirely random) combined with the ability to reawaken people means that taking their wand is the smarter move. Although these days people seem to think that Harry (a teenager) should straight up murder his enemies.

But I digress. Wrist holsters were a silly idea. One for your belt or strapped to your calf is marginally better. But I think mostly that the whole wizard just carrying his wand however he felt like it works best, it even allows for personalization in carrying modes (lookin' at you pimp cane). It's kinda like your wallet/purse, no great thought is required on the proper location, you just make sure you've got it, and it can't randomly be misplaced.

And I'm done. Probably the longest post I've made and it was talking about wand care of all things.

That was a response to my post, not nmb's or ched's. And it was tongue-in-cheek, and appreciated that way :p

So it was. That's what I get for late night lurking. Oh well, most of the post was addressing the topic line, not the topic of cleavage wands.

Some wands go up to 13 inches. Personally, that's longer than my forearm and I'm 25 years old. It would be impractical as fuck to have a wand holster on your forearm (unless it's magically bigger on the inside, but I'm wary of this plot device in this instance). I've also seen holster that send your wand into your hand with a flick of your wrist; I don't know about you, but I move my wrist in all kind of direction throughout the day and I fancy poking someone in the eye accidentally. Add to that the impracticality of actually replacing the wand into the holster after using it and I think we can probably disregard the possibility of a wand holster attached to the forearm.

I'm more partial to thigh (strap to it) or belt holster like a gun for military and para military personnel. Average Joe is probably tucking his wand into a pocket.

On the subject of robes, Mary GrandPre also drew them opening in the front. I figure that's a better source than the movies, even if it may contradict the text in some instances.

Not to derail the thread on clothing, but I'm pretty sure the movies do the same. If you look at these pictures for example:

Most of the Wizard's robe are open up front. They look like some sort of over coat.

I guess wizard robes just have a wand pocket, but I don't really understand tucking a foot long wand in to a jeans pocket any more than a wand holster. As to forearm holsters, for people who do have somewhat short wands they seem fine.

When I see it in a fic I tend to just roll with it and not dwell on it, though, personally.

I envision several types of wand holster depending on the user and the use.

A forearm, hidden blade style holster would be useful for a duelist or a fighter, whilst a belt holster of some kind (that works like a sword scabbard in miniature, or potentially a stun gun or pepper spray style holster) could be more general purpose as it's more open, easier to access etc. Equally, a holster on the non-dominant forearm, with the wand holstered tip inwards (towards the elbow) to allow a caster to withdraw it from long baggy sleeves using the dominant hand is the kind of holster I generally imagine Dumbledore to have, allowing him to reach his wand hand into his huge sleeves and withdraw to start casting with a bit of the element of surprise on his opponent.

EDIT: As I pressed post I also thought of strapping it to the thigh or strapping it to the calf like a combat knife with the tip stuck in a boot.

Really, since a wand is basically a stick with a handle (sometimes it doesn't even have a defined handle, just a "back" and "front" of the wand), you can go to town and imagine your own to fit characters or character roles/types that you have.

They should have collapsible wands like a flick knife.

I've always imagined it worn on your hip like a knife sheath.

OH MY GOD FLAMINALPACA YOU ARE MY BRETHREN.

(But on-topic, I always liked the idea that a wand holstered on your wrist could be used to perform simple jabbing spells without being drawn.)

For ladies, I'm imagining a thigh holster but I don't think dress slits are in fashion for the witches, well maybe for Bellatrix....
Assassin's Creed wrist holster thinggie it is then!

Hammerspace with an Assassins Creed type holster. Trying to remember the fic, but there was one that specifically stated that Harry modified the standard Auror holster to include room for throwing knives. I definitely remember Greengrass was featured in the fic, but can't for the life of me find it.

I imagined them as spring-loaded leather contraptions that you could slide your wand into and have it ejected (handle into your palm) via a deliberate forearm twist. Certainly not for everybody; maybe duellists or just someone wanting to hide a second wand. Probably would only work for persons with wands under 9 inches though... forearms aren't as long as I thought they were.

I like the idea, where you have the holster on your non dominate arm and then draw the wand with your dominate hand. So there's no special contraption or spell, just a place to hold your wand.

douter. Seems too... muggle-ish for me. It would be better if there were a spell to transfer the wand to the hand.

@Myrrdin Emrys. Yeah having a your wand just appear in your hand would be totally rad, but for a place to just store your wand a non magical arm holster would probably suffice.

I like the idea of having a wand up your sleeve and just using wandless non-verbal summoning to get it. I'm pretty sure there's a couple of times in canon where Dumbledore does something like this.
