Just do what I do and cling to the hope that the CBS show will be good, what with an actual fan / former DS9-Voyager writer at the helm. Then you can fully enjoy the new movies for what they are: silly sci-fi romps only loosely-based on Trek.

The Star Trek movies have been a massive disappointment for me, even though I've never watched any of the original TV series. I have no real hopes for this movie either.

What's this about a new TV series though?

Yesterday, I went to see the warcraft movie with a bunch of friends and I was the only Warcraft ´s fanboy. Everyone enjoyed it, one of my friends who only watches films that got decent reviews is surprised with rotten tomatoes score.

I felt that the movie did justice to warcraft.

Ended up going to Warcraft, was better than I'd feared it'd be (I feared a complete and utter flop), worse than I'd hoped (spent too much time on the games not to hope for that.) Visuals were amazing, Medivh came across exactly as arrogant as an all-powerful solitary mage with an inflated sense of ego should in the first act of the film, as well as in the situation room just before the last act starts. (Plot happens in between.) Durotan was also good, Gul'dan's voice grated on me a tiny bit too much. Orcs good, easter egg gags great. I also liked Lothar.

Plotting, however, meh. Overall plot was Ye Olde Standard Fantasy Plotte, deviating from Warcraft I canon in the most predictable way. (And I was so hoping for scenery gore...). Subplots were terrible, with tropes abound and not in a good way. Garona and pretty much everything surrounding her felt weak. I also have slight issues with a couple of lore-related things that could have been included.

7 or thereabouts. Treat it like you'd treat a run-of-the-mill action film, except in the fantasy genre. If the upcoming Assassin's Creed film is of about the same quality, I think it'd be a decent pair of video game films to break the ice.

No mind slave Garona, no aged Khadgar, no burned Stormwind, Lothar and Garona romance. Just to name a few.

but no Medivh and Garona romance thank god, fuck Med'an.

Khadgar is the chief one on the 'could've been included' list. Another is Gul'dan going into a coma from Medivh being killed (was mentally linked at the time, which allowed Doomhammer to grab control of the Horde.)

Lothar/Garona romance is one of the terrible subplots I mentioned.

They have some good people on board, people who know what Star Trek is about. Normally that would make me cautiously hopeful. But I am too disenchanted by the new movies to allow my hopes to get up.

What Star Trek has been about has changed for every series they produced. Some for the better, some for the *worse*.

But then I don't understand the disappointment in the reboot. For me both films are better than probably every ST film ever produced especially when the fandom/campy stuff got out of control. Even my favorite ST6 has horribly aged. Something I don't expect from the new ones.

P.S. Burning down this valium TNG/Voyager morality theme is the best thing which could ever happen to ST:)

Even if I agree, I find it best to leave the Trekkies to their own devices...

Finally saw Warcraft. Liked it, a lot.

The hyperbolic bullshit coming from movie critics I once respected though is ridiculous.

Like a few people here, I went with someone who doesn't even game let alone play Warcraft, and he liked it too. He needed explaining on what the Kirin Tor were though.

I've not played Warcraft 1 in like 20 years, so I'm not one hundred percent on what's changed (other than Dalaran obviously. I suspect Khadgar and Garona didn't originally feature as much?)

Btw in Australia we got free WoW codes with our tickets. Look at the spoiler tag if you're interested.

New Jack Reacher movie coming out based on the novel Never Go Back. Looks solid, and even though I wouldn't have chosen TC for the role, he doesn't disappoint.

In hindsight I would have cast John Bernthal, but he didn't have the roles under his belt that make him appealing for it back then.

Just got back from Independence Day: Resurgence - in a word: rushed.

    In two words: very rushed.

Hard to tell, but I think the whole story takes place over about 12 hours. That's showing the new world twenty years on, introducing new characters, and the return of the aliens and their inevitable defeat.

It was a turd of a film, really. Special effects were great, saw me some alien space battles, and the destruction was off the scale. But the story was crap.

They used the old 'kill the queen and the rest will fall' bullshit. And apparently there was a queen on the first mothership in 1996, as well, that we didn't know we killed. However, for some reason killing that queen didn't kill the rest of the aliens. We've got scenes in Africa where soldiers have been fighting leftover aliens from the first invasion, prisons full of live alien prisoners, and so on... Plot hole upon plot hole.

Hemsworth's character tried for badass funny but just came off as stupid and endangering his team. They should have left him inside the alien ship for being an immature douche.

Brent Spiner's mad character scientist wakes up after 20 years in a coma and apparently jumps right back to work in the space of an hour. Not only does he somehow know how to operate all the new tech, he gets more pointless screentime than Bill Pullman's grizzled old retired president, back to kick alien ass one more god damn time.

His death was wasted. It's shown multiple times across both films that the ships and shuttle craft can be flown on autopilot. There was no reason for Pullman's character to have to 'make the ultimate sacrifice'.

Oh, and the alien mastership also had a Death Star-esque flaw that allowed a group of plucky young humans to get on in.

Bah, should have waited for the DVD of this one.

And don't get me started on that bullshit sphere from the other alien race. 'No one has ever killed a Harvester Queen before,' it said. Then proceeded to tell the humans definitively what would conveniently happen when they killed the queen - all aliens will die and the ship the size of the Pacific will fly off back into space by itself.

I wish I was making that up. I truly do.

    Ugh.

It was 1pm on a Thursday, so only about 20 of us in there - four people walked out.

Especially after seeing him play The Punisher....I'd be on board with that.

I actually work in Cineworld and in regards to Independence Day...the turnout was quite a bit of a disappointment as wel. We only sold 3% of the seats for it. I myself haven't seen all of it yet, I've walked in on certain scenes when doing screen checks but I don't plan on seeing it until I have a shift that finishes fairly early.

So far, our advance screenings for Secret Life of Pets did 30 times better than Resurgence.

Fuck all of you. Independence Day was exactly what I wanted. A campy action movie straight out of the 90s.

    Awesome.

    Regarding your main plot hole:

The queen controls the fighters, they go down without her, not the aliens. Same situation in the first movie apparently. It very much read that those aliens were captured from fallen fighters.

The mothership alone is what's called back by other queens. Can't afford the losses when conquering the Universe I guess...

The African ones apparently were left to some warlord to kill off though? That's a bit weird considering humanity is supposedly now 'united'. /shrug

As for people walking out? Whatever. I dunno who they're trying to impress. They went to go watch a sequel to Independence Day.

Yeah, but you also liked Warcraft so at this point I'm starting to think your taste in films might not coincide with many others. :sherlock:
