QFT. Just clicking browse shows fics with 30 or more tags tacked on. What's the point of listing all characters that make an appearance? "Lyanna Mormont is gracious and I love her" - I mean, WTF? How does this help a potential reader get a feel for the story? Sure, Lyanna was awesome in season 6, but that tells me nothing. Is she in the story? Is it just there because? AO3's tagging system is clusterfuck that only a nuclear purge could even hope to unfuck.

Just look at this:

FFN isn't without problems, but its tagging system is clear, sane and does the job well.

 

The lack of realism or any conceivable effort to think out a story really pisses me off. We know Voldemort uses a wand so wandless magic being so easy a first year Harry can pick it up? I get that it’s a fantastical world and most things can be explained away by saying ‘it’s magic’ but come on.

2. Misspelling of known canon words
3. Magical cores
4. Angst
5. The use of the words pup, cub, Prongslet, Moldyshorts
6. Sudden unexplained slash that leaves you jerking back from your computer screen
7. Lack of slash warning
8. Obvious misspellings in the summary
9. Constant mentions of Harry’s height
10. Ginny
11. The twins finishing each other’s sentences
12. Hermione every saying in a demanding tone, “Explain. Now!”

 

Tragen You forgot about the constant mentions of power levels. Instantly takes me out of HP immersion and into crappy anime mode.

 

We did in Elementary school (US), but it fell out of favor as we got older. It'd happen once in a while in highschool (grades 9-12); of course, this was quite a few years ago, so we mainly just called each other dude or babe. Yeah, I don't miss high school.

 

While I agree with the rest of your list and feel it surmises basically every annoying thing about HP Fanfics, I've got to say I haven't encountered this one much.

Off the top of my head, the only place I've see it is Santi's fic. Unless she said it in Canon somewhere?

I think the easiest solution would be to limit the number of tags you can use. Set it between 10 and 15 and you'll have to use your tags carefully.

 

I had totally forgotten about that occurring in Santi’s work. Thinking back on it though, I’m fairly sure Harry gave her a look that spoke volumes and was enough to placate me. No other specific fic comes to mind but ones featuring it are nine times out of ten something I wouldn’t bother following.

Fucking overuse of adjectives. Specially superlatives. Describing someone as perfect and amazing and its dozens of synonyms is really really fucking lazy, specially when describing an OC or a LI. It'a basically the author refusing to write and just masturbating for his ideas.

 

Didn't you know being super descriptive makes you a better writer?

Lately I'm noticing words that repeat very often in fics and it's pissing me off. The word in particular is "Sheeple".

Does any one else have a particular word or words in fanfics that tends to peeve you off?
