If Phelps thinks the minor increase in blood flow from skin bruising will somehow help him be a better athlete, more power to him. I used to have a soccer coach who said good athletic performance is 50 percent skill and 50 percent positive mindset, and I've generally always found that to be true.

I think it's more to do with Piglett being a classically shy and innocent character. At the start of the joke you think he's a victim but by the end you realise he's a Nazi and it's the sudden flip which provides the humour.
