Got linked to a fic here from another site like 2 years ago. Made an account, never posted. Then found it again today by looking through my old key-logs and clearing out things I don't use anymore.

Found it referenced a lot on reddit but I was still a bit on the fence. Finally decided to join after going through the DLP C2 though as a lot of quality fics were included in it.

I was looking for some good fanfiction that wasn't extremely cliche. A lot of the posts I saw suggested DLP.

Well, it was many years ago. I found it on FF.net reading a story, the author gave his thanks ti someone from this site and recommended for everyone to have a stroll here if we wanted to read some fine work.

I found it through the DLP community on ffn.net. The library list's hugely outdated, and the quality's definitely not all it could be, but it is better than any other other site I've come across.

I hope one day our library can live up to the high standards your avatar has set. :D

Well, what can I say. It could be that I simply value different things in a story than the community here. I usually enjoy HP fanfiction that centers minor characters and unusual settings, whereas the vast majority of the library list consists of stories where Harry is the main protagonist. What I consider quality may differ from what you do. So it's not a matter of having higher standards, but merely different ones. ;)

I found it through google, although some years ago a friend probable spoke about it. It was literally years ago, so I am not sure if it was about this or about an other fan forum. Anyway the reason why I am here is the H.P and the boy who live story! Can't wait to read the chapters 13+!

So basically you like original fiction set in the HP world.

Not necessarily. For example, I recently enjoyed The Changeling by Annerb. Ginny isn't a minor character, but she's mostly overlooked in fanfiction. And then when she does have a presence in a story, she merely exists to serve as a love interest to Harry (as in canon), which I don't think does her character justice. It also had a lot of unusual elements (slytherin!Ginny as opposed to slytherin!Harry, its introspective sort of tone, etc). I enjoyed it, and yet I wouldn't call it 'original fiction set in the HP world'.

Huh, I apologize if I came across that way.

Well, I mean, that's because Ginny doesn't really have much of a canon personality beyond the "spunky redhead" cliche. Authors are free to do whatever with her character as she's essentially a blank slate otherwise. It's why fanon Ginny exists.

The main characters have clearly defined traits and histories that create a certain something around them, which lets us know what they would probably do in a given situation. You don't really have that with tertiary characters. They are original characters that have a semblance of credibility because they are still technically JKR's characters.

You're right, main characters like Harry, Ron and Hermione do have clearly defined traits and histories, and because of their virtue as main characters, they've been analyzed back to front from a thousand different angles, a thousand different times, to the point that few authors have anything to say about them that is interesting or hasn't already been explored before.

With tertiary characters like Ginny, Luna, Neville, Draco, etc., canon does give you a basic idea as to what their childhoods were like, and general character traits, but we rarely get actual insight as to their emotions, thoughts, motivations, desires, and so on - you know, the stuff that makes a character an actual character. That gives authors opportunity to take these characters and give a perspective on the wizarding world that canon doesn't. That's sort of exactly why I liked The Changeling and other fics that do similar things.

I'm not sure though that I'd call them 'original characters that have a semblance of credibility because they are still technically JKR's characters', nor would I call them 'blank slates'. Like I said before, we do get a lot of information as to their histories and traits, more than you realize from canon, and especially from stuff like Pottermore. If you were to consider a character like Neville, for example, you are told are he has an overbearing grandmother, is the pureblood son of aurors rendered insane from exposure to the cruciatus, was thought a squib by his family and probably ridiculed for it, is shy and has low self esteem, etc. This sort of stuff is enough to infer what such tertiary characters would probably do in a given situation. What is missing is, like I said before, actual insight into their emotions, thoughts, etc., and we aren't given this because they aren't the main characters in canon. That's what makes them interesting to me in fanfiction.

But this is probably more than you wanted to hear from me. :)

I found DLP through an Internet search. I was looking or Fanfiction Pet Peeves. I went on Reddit and saw a lot of people ranting about it and decided to give it a go out of intrigue.

I found DLP on google a long time ago, sighed up, lurked for two weeks, grown bored of it, and now I came back to try again. It only took me, what, two years ?
I don't remember the 200 characters needed to post though !

Can't even come close to remembering how I originally found this place. I know that it was mentioned by the author of a story I was reading at the time. I could probably narrow it down to either RossWrock or maybe Jbern.

It's been really interesting so far. I've lurked around for a really long time. I remember when I first joined I loved reading the introduction threads. I was actually pretty close to making one of my own when they were closed down.
