I can't stand really clumsily written propaganda pieces in the Prophet. Most authors write them far too heavy handily. If you can't write it well, don't write it, just describe it.

Agreed. I'll add that I hate newspaper articles being written in full into stories at all. Absolutely awful, I generally completely skip it because you can always figure out what it said in the following paragraphs anyway.

Actually I feel that way about a lot of things, sometimes I'll just page down over boring, drawn out, paragraphs and have absolutely no trouble picking up on where things are while doing so. Almost everything written should be important enough that you have to read it, and that just isn't remotely true for a vast majority of fics.

    -------------------------------------------

I can't authors trying to write a 'developing romance' where they think the phrase, "What? Where did that come from?", is in any way fulfilling of this idea or even any good to read in general. I hate reading that, I hate it so much.

I think HHr fics are the most common users of this.

I want to see a story where they follow all the HP/HG clichés and then when Harry goes "What? Where did that come from?" he realises it's the love potion.

    Edit:

Just read the first few chapters of a fic, liked it enough follow it, next chapter an OC is introduced who has the same name as the author, unfollowed.

Childbirth scenes. Whenever I see one, it drives me away from a story immediately. It's made worse by the fact that they're almost always the same. I think I've seen the same line of dialogue in every single one of them.

I have never read a childbirth scene on FanF.net "shudders" I have had the misfortune of reading the a "Maurader's Era" fic where for some reason the four adult witches and wizards live exactly like muggles now that they're out of Hogwarts.

Even worse than regular childbirth scenes. Mpreg and the anal babies scenes. I once saw a fic where Snape was having Harry's baby and was crying about it.

I didn't need to know this. I mean I could have guessed but I actively avoided the entire mpreg genre so I'd never really had to think about it. Why...

"X Reads The Books" fics... where the books in question are not the Harry Potter series but, in fact, other works of HP fan fiction.

There isn't a gun on the Earth big enough to shoot myself with for this one. :rrou:

    Unrealistic anime-tropes in HP fanfiction.

These include, but are not limited to:

    - Nosebleeds caused by arousal.
    - Sweat-drops.
    - Throbbing-veins.
    - TEENAGE boys scared by naked girls to the point of horror.
    - Katanas and other swords.
    - "Eeeehhhh???!?!"
    - Over-abusive female characters / ear pulling. Hermione is not Sakura and Harry/Ron are not Naruto.

    And so on...

People who do this should drown in gasoline.

These tropes shouldn't exist in anime either.

To be fair, it sort of makes sense (especially in manga). A lot of them can act as a useful visual cue. With text it becomes asinine, obviously, but if it's just one panel it's not particularly overbearing. Considering it tends to just occur in shounen anime and manga, where the jokes are designed to be a quick punch to the gut, before quickly moving on, it makes sense for it to be used.

I want to know where the idea of nosebleeds caused by arousal spawned from..

It is probably "arousal = heightened blood pressure = nosebleed"

But where it first appeared, I have no idea. It's probably as old as anime/manga itself.

He's probably not sure what "vein" is. Just that it's throbbing.

I'm not that familiar with anime, but in general, I don't have a problem with this as long as it fits. A character suffers a migraine from a particularly vicious curse? a throbbing vein makes sense. Of course, that's probably one of the few times it does, but still . . .
Depending on context, this actually has basis in real life. Hell, I've known twenty-something adult males that fit this situation. Of course, there was abuse in the past, so it's part of a larger scenario . . . and a trope vastly overdone in HPff.

If it's overdone, I can see it. But hell, anyone who has a big sister can probably relate to this trope.

    __________

That said, is there a style to the trope that makes it different than how someone who is not into anime would write it?

To anyone who has ever watched anime/manga the trope is way overdone.

When you read about it by someone who doesn't watch that stuff it comes across more believable.

For example McGonagal taking Draco by the ear in PS made sense because she was really pissed off at him for breaking the rule.

In Naruto and other anime tropes you have the character taken by the ear because he was polite to the wrong person ie. the girl is jealous or is just having a bad day, and it's not considered abuse it's just "normal interaction" between guys and girls.

Seems small but, how can an author fail to tag their story complete when it is? Easily makes the difference for me deciding to read it or not if I think it's been abandoned for over 3 years. Filtering is harder too.
