    Hyphenated last names.

Yeah, I know it does happen, but it seems that in fanfics everyone ends up with a hyphenated last name. Sorry, but the idea that everyone in the fic has this is stupid. It's not that common.

Depends on where you come from, I remember a girl who's surname was ( I shit you not) Sandra Willbrourough-Caladough-Worthington-Templeton-Smythee. I think the really unbelievable part is when the double barrels are all new, as in from the same generation or two. Though there has been a more recent trend about double barreling or blending the father and mothers names, in Britain at least, a lot of the 'posh' multiple surnames that people associate with the aristocracy are old, paternal, and represent some consolidation of old estates or ancient family marriage alliance, or preserving some distinguished name that would otherwise have died out.

They also tend to get abbreviated or shortened for obvious reasons, poor old Sandra ended up being called W.C, which meant of course she ended up being known as Sandra Toilet, because children are awful.

Well at least the whole Lord Harry James Potter-Black saga seems to have ended. It used to be that every other new fic seemed to be using that.

They're not so much afraid of the naked girls, as much as they are of being beaten within an inch of their life for the crime of having seen them.

Never mind that most of the time they ended up in that situation because of circumstances beyond their control, or because it was the girl's own fault.

But that doesn't matter, it's a ass-beating for you, kid...
(I'm sure a lot of women in the Western world would be totally simpatico with that line of thought.)

My sister is a decade older than I am, so she certainly could have gotten away with pulling on my ear... but she never did, nor did she manhandle me in any other way.

So at least I lucked out in that regard, apparently.

Unfortunately, I think it's more along the lines of sexual abuse . . . but other types cause it as well. Then, there's those who just aren't ready for it and feel overwhelmed.

    LOL Apparently.

I think the whole "pulling the ear" thing is more of a old-fashioned throwback, kind of like the "When I was your age, I walked three miles to school in four feet of snow, uphill, both ways, and I liked it!" mantra.

    On a similar note:

Reading a book where the single Japanese supporting character covers her mouth to hide a smile/giggle/laugh repeatedly. Of course, she's also almost thirty and the second smartest person in the world.

Me wonders—anime trope? If so . . . I have a new pet-peeve (if not, I think I still do. Once was fine, even cute. It fit. Repeatedly? not so much.)

That's just a Japanese thing (you see it in other Asian cultures too sometimes) most women (and some men) customarily cover their mouth when they laugh or eat. I think its to do with not showing your teeth or the inside of your mouth being feminine or refined or something like that. Someone told me once it was because people used to have bad/black teeth but I think that explanation is disputed. So you probably do see it in anime, but that's just a reflection of a Japanese cultural quirk. If a Japanese female is doing it, it actually would add an extra layer of cultural realism to the character, though I guess it would be annoying to have t mentioned over and over.

Ah, thank you for the clarification. I remembered a feminist critique of anime that talked about powerful, strong women who one second was kicking everyone's ass, but then followed up with some overblown feminine element to soften the characters and keep them "female." That trope still may be a part of the book I'm reading, but knowing culturally it's still something done at least helps.

Imagine a scene where a 16-17 boy is in the shower and a girl (same age) enters the bathroom.

Now, in real life the girl would probably either be embarrassed and leave or it was intentional and it would end very happily for the two of them.

In anime, the boy would be scared to the point of death and the girl would be angry (even though she should check before entering the bathroom).

This is so infuriating, I get that this is fiction and all, but this isn't how real human beings act.

One thing that's more of a general complaint than specific to Harry Potter is the whole threesome/OT3 shipping thing. It's like the authors don't want to resolve a love triangle, so they just have everyone get together. Now I like a story ending on a happy note as much as the next person, but it's just such an odd thing to have happen that it ruins the story.

I've seen this a few times but I always thought it was always intended even if it wasn't made clear at the beginning. Very annoying if I'm just enjoying the existing relationship and the author decides write to write in the other girl generally using the main female character as the driver some how.

Don't you know that jealousy is a negative trait? Can't have our perfect little protagonists exhibit anything so unseemly.

Extremely rare and commonly ends poorly when it does happen.

And? It's fiction. It's inherently about rare circumstances.

Is there anything backing that up? Just wondering.

Not that I am a fan of this troupe, but on a worldwide scale polygamy and polyandry not as rare as you think. It may have been outlawed in the west for centuries but its still fairly common (or at least not uncommon) practice across a fairly proportional swath of the world. Now I cant speak from experience but I can't imagine that it 'commonly' ends badly when entire cultures still practice it.

If realism in relationships is the ultimate concern with polyamorous fics, shouldn't there also be concern for other realism issues? I mean, finding three people who are interested in that kind of relationship at school age is a much more unrealistic idea than the relationship itself. Hell, finding your "one true love" at 15, as numerous fics have done, is also unrealistic. Really, how much do most people have to do with friends from that time in their lives, even if they stay geographically close? Perhaps it's different in the U.K., seeing how it's tiny compared to the U.S., but me and my four best friends from high school went to the four corners of the country almost literally. Oklahoma, Seattle, New York, Houston, and Atlanta. I haven't seen them in person since like 2009., and we only graduated in 2006. 90% of the relationships from high school have ended, based on what I see on Facebook.

Regardless, it's almost always just author insert wish fulfillment with poly fics, so taking that for what it is greatly simplifies the reaction I have to it.

A rather large one that I despise.

God/Deity character gives ground, or some how becomes under the power of a mortal. I don't know if it's just me, but I'm sure a God would have a fail safe, or let them be in control of a mortal. Perhaps I've played God of War too much, but if I was a godly being, I'd strike down a mother fucker if that happened.

I suppose that falls under a ancient power/force immediately falling under the control of someone as well.

Something that has been said a hundred times before, but I need to went after trying to read fic's on ffn again:

God damn "Potter family vault". Especially when there is nothing beyond even more money there.

I can sort of understand it when the author uses the family vault cliche to introduce a grimoire, portraits, magical super weapon or whatever other lazy deus ex machina he has chosen. But when it's only money? Why? Is mounds of gold as tall as a eleven year old child truly not enough for whatever you have planed?

Worst of all. In half of the damn fics, that use this stupid cliche, it's not even brought up again after someone has noted how Harry is one of the richest wizards alive.

I think Renegade Cause had one of the only acceptable uses of the "Potter Family Vault"
