A bit of googling reveals that history frequently gets an 'an' because it derives from French where the h is silent. Chalk it up to the English language's habit of beating up other languages and taking their weird stuff.

Shortening of names. Not all of them, mind you. Just most of them.

Specifically: Albus into Al, Minerva into Mini, James into Jim (that only works for Star Trek and nothing else), Peter into Pete, Regulus into Reg and I swear I even saw Sirius shortened one time to Siri. Oh and let's not forget Severus to Sev and Draco to Dray - seriously, seeing these is probably a good indicator that you should stop reading the story, unless you want to read about Harry (or Hermione) fucking one of those two.

People shortening complicated names is natural. Why is this an issue?

 

Just one time? I see like every other story I open. It's a freaking plague. I keep wanting to yell "iPhones weren't invented yet!" every time I see it. Then I realize that they were talking about Sirius. Then I think about how stupid shortening his name to Siri is really stupid. It's one more freaking syllable! Spit it out!


I frankly don't care about name shortening as long as it makes some sort of sense and is within the character of the person in question. I could see perfectly well a young Sirius calling Peter "Petey" depending on the situation. However, I can't see Voldemort doing the same.

It is rare the author that sees the difference on FF.net.

 

I can tolerate most of them. What's awful is people shortening Harry to "Har". No one does that in real life.

I'm pretty sure I've read Remus being called Remy or something to that effect.

The worst name shortenings though are ones that aren't canon like "Mione" Ron or Harry never called her that. Saying someone's name with your mouth full of food doesn't count.

Minnie is another name that pisses me off especially when it comes from Sirius or Harry's mouths.

 

Unless it's an X-Men/HP crossover and Remus is strangely Gambit, then I cry foul!
