Basically, the fucks in Hollywood want another HP and Sanderson's bibliography is making them salivate at all the Benjamins they'll be raking in with enormous farming machinery.

If it comes out well, I'm perfectly happy to fill their pockets. Sanderson's books are basically movies on paper already, and the length is less of an issue because a lot of it is worldbuilding; which can be built up much quicker on screen.

^ This, basically. I'd agree that starting with Mistborn, or any of the (currently) standalone books would seem to make more sense, but so long as it turns out well I can get past that.

IIRC the first 5 books of Stormlight are meant to be a complete story arc. The remaining 5 books take place after a timeskip and focus on different characters.

Like everyone else, I consider this news to be very disappointing.

Stormlight should A) be a tv series and B) be made by someone that wasn't responsible for a couple of the saw movies.

Definitely start with Mistborn, if you're about to be Sanderson'ing. Then everything else (hell, even throw Wheel of Time in) before you hit the Stormlight Archive.

I think you can appreciate the scope of Stormlight, and the Cosmere, all the more, if you come at it with the rest of his bibliography loaded and spent. Similiar to reading King's Dark Tower, though on a broader scale.

Also, I can't remember where I read this (I'll go googling), but I remember an article that said Sanderson was prolifically churning his way through Books 1-5 of Stormlight and then he was going to pump the brakes. Given his level of output, no one can blame the man.

Don't start with Elantris, whatever you do.

I would personally recommend The Emporers soul, it is his tightest, best-written work to date and it is a nice short read.

I actually picked up Elantris first, I recall liking it well enough. Is it considered his worst?

Yup. It was his first published work. Generally agreed to be his weakest as well.

Sanderson's pretty good when it comes to writing quickly, but I do hope the time between Stormlight books drops. At this rate it's 3.5 years between them, which is just too long imo, for a 10 book series. If it keeps up, that's 35 years to completion.

If anyone can churn books out though, it's Sanderson.

Unfortunately I do recall reading an article that Stormlight will slow down - Sanderson saying as much - after Book 5. He intends this to be his magnum opus, his life's major work, and may therefore take him a lifetime.

Despite that, great news Oathbringer is nearly with the publishers!

Aaah. Well, that's ok then I guess.

He's certainly started off very well for his magnum opus. I do like the fact that it's two series split in 5, not 10 books. That would suck more I guess.

Am I the only one not impressed by the ridiculous wordcount? I realize that much of it will probably be cut in editing, but TWOK was like 387k in print and I was bored through 2/3 of it.

I mean, for me the pacing wasn't terrible, but an an editor really did still need to take a chainsaw to the work.

I think they knew that. Which is why WoR is so much tighter.
