    Welcome to
    The Orange Lords
    a CK2 succession game

    (*)

The year is 1066. The Kingdoms of Europe are as turbulent as ever but for one nobleman, disaster has struck.

The wife of Count Rainaut of Venaissin lies dead from childbirth. The nobleman sits in his chambers, peering down at the softly breathing form of his firstborn son and wonders of life. So short, so fragile, so utterly meaningless.

That fate would not befall him, or his son. He was a man grown with prosperous holds and he resolved to act, to make sure his name and that of his family would not fall into obscurity.

He strode to the wall and looked at himself in the mirror.

He really was a fat cunt. That would have to be remedied.

He looked out the window to the south and pondered his Liege Lord, Duke Bertrand. If he were to advance in life and improve his family's lot he would need to overthrow the man eventually but in the short term he would need to stay in the man's good graces.

The days and months roll on with little of any import happening. Councillors are given new roles befitting Rainaut's new ambitions, collecting taxes, researching technology and improving relations.

Soon though, the realm goes to war over the fate of Zeeland. The French are contesting it and a large army is marching south, intent on capturing territory.

    Burgundy territory.

Rainaut decides this cannot happen and in an effort to improve his standing with both Duke and Kaiser, raises his levies.

He knows there is a german army marching south to intercept the Frankish forces and with the two armies reportedly of a similar size, he decides tomarch forward and tip the scales of the battle.

He and nearly two thousand men sally forth to battle!

Only for the German army to steer clear and suddenly march north. Too late, Rainaut realises he's been abandoned by the Kaiser. Thirteen thousand Frenchmen descend on his meager forces.

So ends the reign of Count Rainaut the fat idiot.

Okay so that was fucking terrible. Didn't even make it one year. That's the score to beat, Distaly. :facepalm

Why would you send your only living dynasty member into battle?

Leading an army into a battle of that size would have been likely to trigger positive events. In all the games I've played I've lost a minuscule amount of rulers this way.

Did not expect the Germans to turn tail and avoid the battle last minute though. That fucked me hard. So yeah, good luck Distaly.

If you get the chance, name the grandson something totally badass, like Dragomir or Kill-Devil or something.

Why when you could go with a badass theme? I tend to use LOTR dwarf names for Viking dynasties.

Our house was crambling when a one year old took over the lead. His most important goal was clear, reach adulthood and sire enough children to ensure the his legacy. And he did succed. Even through illness and political rampage he lived.

Our liege decided to revolte against the Kaiser, but failed. He was replaced by another Count whom we had to swear featly and yet we lived.
Our dear Count got ill at the tender age of 7 and yet he lived.

And when he finally hit the age of 16 he chose to accomplish great things. His wife gifted the realm with several children who will keep the family alive, so the next goal was clear, increase the country. He was able to overthrow his liege in an hard and expensive battle, but in the end we succeded, becoming the new Duke.

But luck was not on our side it seems, as just as we managed to forge a claim on a nearby county, the Kaiser, in his endless wisdom decided to to implement the medium crown authority, preventig us from pressing our claim.

Which forced us to seek land outside of the HRE. Political alliances with the kingdom of Aragon shall help us [and then I realised after the marriage that the "kingdom" was merely one count big :/ ]. A bit of land in the West at the coast of what later would be Spain and in the high north which they call the Éire got conquered.

Albeit he was not able to increase his lands as much as we would have liked in his more than 70 years of reign he did his best to continue his family, having more than 5 children and a fuckton of grandchildren.

Looks like Galleys are going to need to be a thing in this playthrough. What county in Ireland was it, out of curiosity?

Hmm, can we do something like name a province after the person ruling at the time and see how we build up?
