Just... Don't expect it to be King Arthur.

There certainly is a man called Arthur, and a sword, and a guy called Mordred. But it bears very little resemblance to any of the legends and stories you might be familiar with.

I've noticed a lot of Guy Ritchie films I've really liked lately getting cool receptions. Notably from British critics.

Whatever. Filter opinions out you know don't mesh with your tastes re reviews.

Well, I thought it was good at first and slowly became an incoherent mess. I'd rather see a sequel to Man from UNCLE, which I think is underrated.

Saw the new Pirates. It was...decent. Very Pirates. I am kind of tired of the whole 'Plucky Jack and co. run from and eventually defeat evil magical pirates' schtick. Was some dumb humour at the start but the movie improved as it went on. Whoever wrote it missed the opportunity to build off the previous movies with some magic pirates vs magic pirates shenanigans.

Don't regret seeing it but I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

Wanted way more of the FlashbackJack. By far my favourite scene in the movie.

Was it just me or did they retcon a ton of stuff in this movie?

Far as I'm concerned Pirates ended with the third one.

I felt like the tribute stuff that he always wears might have been. Not sure.

And I quite liked Pirates 4. A lot. No Will / Elizabeth, Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane.

Nah I mean the way he got the compass and Will Turner's fate re: the Dutchman. I swear there was something else too, but it escapes me.

Meh, I don't think the first one needed a sequel. It went downhill after the first imo.

The first one was the best, but I thought the first three wrapped up a decent story. I don't remember much of the fourth really, but I didn't hate it, I just thought it was superfluous.

Wait, didn't Calypso imply she gave him the compass?

Does the movie address the origins of the Black Pearl? IIRC in the second film Davy Jones says he raised the Pearl from the ocean for Jack for 13 years. I always wondered if the Pearl was some sort of actual fantastical ship like the Dutchman instead of just a fast ship that earned a reputation because of Barbossa and his crew. Then after the trailers dropped featuring young Jack I thought the Pearl might have been a ship he served on that got sunk.

From memory, it was just a regular ship that was burnt (why it's black) and sunk to the bottom of the sea (I think by Beckett?), then DJ raised it.

There's a flashback scene in this one that shows him becoming captain, and from memory, the sails were white at that point Can't recall if it looked like the Pearl otherwise, but the pearl's timber is all seemingly charred black too.

The Pearl was a ship that Jack loved. It was sunk by the EIC because Jack freed a cargo of slaves he had been hired to transport. He entered into a contract with Davy Jones for 99 souls (same number of slaves he freed) in return for it to be raised from the depths.

Previous movies did imply that Calypso was the one to give Jack his compass. Previous movies also implied that Will Turner was freed from his duties/curse on the Dutchman when Elizabeth was there waiting for him when his ten years were up and he could set foot on dry land--whereas Davy Jones was cursed to eternal servitude on the Dutchman because Calypso was not there waiting for him when his first ten years were up. "Is my nature.", as she said to Jones when he asked why she wasn't there.

No, you got it wrong with the Dutchman curse. Will wasn't freed from the curse when he went to meet Elizabeth, it was just that his allotted one day ashore came up so he could meet his family. After that day he went back to Dutchmanning. Davy Jones hated Calypso because she didn't meet him after ten years, so he made the deal with the Brethren Court, stopped ferrying dead souls as his curse bid him to, and as a result he and his crew turned into seafood monsters.

Nah there's a writer's/director's commentary that states that Elizabeth meeting him on that day sets him free. I'll see if I can find it.

Yeah some quick googling found some sources of the writer's saying, 'if the Captain of the Dutchman can find a love that is true to him, his connection to the ship will be broken.' With Elizabeth staying true to him and them meeting during Will's one permitted day on land, the curse is broken. The seafood monster appearance was also a result of them not being true to their duties, not just a standard occurrence. Which was all then retconned in this latest movie.

Well, from simply watching the movies the impression it left was what Scott described. Will is forever cursed, etc, one day per decade ashore etc. Which makes me wonder they couldn't meet, y'know, on the sea. A ship, or something.

But yeah, dunno about what some writers said on other media, but I think most people got the same impression from the movie itself?

Saw King Arthur, loved it. Guy Ritchie dialogue translates surprisingly well, I thought.

Oh, and Arthur is a fucking G, lol.

Pirates was okay. I enjoyed it for the silly pirate romp that it was. However, like the fourth, it definitely failed to capture the charm of the first three.

Biggest problem was that the new young people were wooden as fuck, and it made Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom's first PotC attempts seem like mastercraft acting workshops in comparison. Lackluster dialogue didnt help either.
