I've only just recently moved to a city that makes going to see films convenient, and I have to say I'm surprised by how little there is to watch.

Steady now, Baywatch just came out. Don't say things you can't take back.

Watched the movie last Friday. I agree with all the points you made. The attempts at flirting by the kids felt so very forced.

And considering that Barbossa wrote the diary, he knew the location of the trident and didn't need anyone's help to go get it. He could have used the trident to break the curse of the Aztec gold that he and his crew mates were under in the first movie.

He didn't write it though. It was Galileo's, he just stole it and left it with the baby.

    Haven't seen pirates yet...

But by the convos it sounds so convuluted and plot holish not worth seeing in theater

I'll save my money for Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is getting really wonderful reviews. ;)

At the same time, the big question is how well it will do in the BO. If Suicide Squad could open with $133m then it should be at least that much for this film, but WW's marketing wasn't as good. I do expect it to at least have much lesser drops. Less than 50% weekend to weekend wouldn't be a surprise.

I'm excited for Wonder Woman. The trailers aren't overly detailed which I like.

Really like that they haven't shown ares in the marketing

    Got back from Pirates.

I'll echo previous sentiments in that it was a fun movie, and it at least used previous movie elements unlike the 4th one.

I will agree that there was a hugely missed opportunity with no less than 3 magical ghost ships running about at the same time, with the Pearl skulking in the corner waiting for the right time. Why the hell didn't we get to see some magic ship vs magic ship action?

Regardless, movie was good despite the cringy acting attempts of the token young couple, as others pointed out. Still, neither of the two was worse than Knightly at her best, so eh.

    EDIT: Wrong thread.

Uh... um. Looking forward to Thor 3?

Oh, and I'm not gonna see Wonder Woman. The whole DC stuff just doesn't appeal to me.

I just got back from Wonder Woman- an easy 7/10, maybe higher (I'll get to work on a proper review). I'm absolutely thrilled with how this turned out. The DCEU is looking up!

    *Edit* And here's my review:

Following the controversial history of the DC expanded universe, Wonder Woman is a shining example of what the franchise could and should be. It is, simply, a breath of fresh air.

For one thing, the cinematography is amazing. The director Patty Jenkins and cinematographer Matthew Jensen proved to be truly formidable in this area, not just in the brilliant large scale battles but also in the more confined, personal moments. This is a very emotional film, and the direction of the actors, camera and set mirror this.

Speaking of the actors, it would be a travesty not to praise them: Gal Gadot and Chris Pine were incredible as Diana herself and Steve Trevor, both having incredible chemistry and capable of delivering anything the plot required from them. These are quite possibly my definitive iterations of the characters, definitely doing justice to them. The supporting cast was, however, kind of lacking. They were mostly forgettable, and the only ones I really remember were the main crew. That being said, I'm not saying that the side-actors were bad.

Indeed, they actually have a fair amount of talent, and thinking about it they contributed a lot to the overall movie, sometimes offering diversity in opinions and origins and sometimes diversity in tone and displaying the effects of the situation the characters are in. You feel like these are actual people, going through situations we can easily sympathise with.

The antagonists were not terrible- I found the big bad enjoyable and threatening, and the lesser villains to be good enough to serve their purpose and role in the narrative. That aside however, they weren’t the best supervillains we’ve seen, nowhere near as bad as the Enchantress but simultaneously a laughing stock compared to Ledger’s Joker.

On other levels, this movie still succeeds. Technically, it’s superb, with pretty awesome CGI and everything along those lines: it’s all great. Now though, the actual substance of the film:

The script and story was fantastic; it is wonderful. At some moments, I actually found myself laughing out loud at the jokes (though none of the secretary’s/Etta Candy’s- she was one of the worst parts of the film for me, if only because it was such a dramatic and uncomfortable change from the tone from beforehand, and I simply found her annoying) and felt my heart beating faster at some of the more impactful moments.

The messages of the story, including the importance of peace, there being good and evil in everyone and the concept of it coming down to our beliefs rather than what people deserve, were all very timeless and powerful, intertwining with the characters and the plot/direction to deliver a tightly packed and potent picture.

To conclude, I loved this movie. It was powerful and emotional, all the while (mostly) acted brilliantly with characters we care about, with brilliant direction, effects and a fantastic script that puts the DCEU on track to be the fantastic franchise that it has the potential to be. You have to see this; I’d give Wonder Woman a high 7/10.

Went to see Colossal, which was as good as I'd hoped, albeit in a different way. I was expecting a quirky, indie comedy/kaiju film, not a quirkie, indie film that uses kaiju as a metaphor for alcoholism and abuse. Still, great film. Hathaway was excellent, and while I'm not sure I've ever seen Jason Sudeikis in anything before, he was far better than I was expecting.

Yeah Sudeikis always surprises you cause you're not expecting to see him there and he's generally pretty good. There's a movie called A Good Old Fashioned Orgy that he's in that's got some gold moments.

The last twenty minutes or so really soured what was otherwise a really enjoyable film for me.

The action, especially the parts that go super slow-mo to emphasise impacts really hit home, and all the whip stuff looked cool as shit.

As you say, Gadot and Pine have really great chemistry. Her innocence and Pine's struggling to cope were particularly adorable.

    That end though...

The movie would have been far better without Aeris imo. I thought they were going metaphorical with the God of War, and that there was no otherworldly being manipulating men into war, but rather man's desire to war was what birthed the idea of Aeris or whatever. Would have been awesome if WW had that revelation after killing that general guy.

Then the scene after Aeris dies, with all the German soldiers taking off their gas masks to hug and embrace each other - even the Chief dude! - had me literally cringing. I looked over to my mate in confused bemusement, a look he mirrored.

Tbf, had my biggest gripe not happened at the end of the movie, I might have had a more positive impression going out. As it stands, it made me feel a movie I would have said was great before that is 'only' decent.

Wonder Woman was pretty good. None of the grimdark nonsense that DC has been trying and failing to pull off for several movies. Just fun action.

My biggest problem was the predictability.
As soon as Lupin showed up, I knew he was Ares, and that the german guy was a red herring. The initial setup was just too straightforward for there to NOT be a twist. Also, I would have been much more satisfied had there been some sort of after credit scene with Ares resurrecting in order to show that there's no defeating man's penchant for war.

I was pretty sure Ares was going to be Doctor Poison. And I mean, the dude survived smite-by-lightning once before, decent odds he's still kicking around. Guess we'll see how (if) they bother explaining WWII in relation to Ares too.

I enjoyed it, but honestly couldn't see a difference in quality between it and all its predecessors. The outrage over them has always seemed like butthurt nerd snobbery to me.

I enjoyed Wonder Woman, but not as much as I was hoping from the very positive reviews I've seen over the last week or so. I had mixed feelings about the fight scenes and the slo-mo - sometimes it was awesome, but at times it felt a bit weightless, kind of obvious that we were watching people in front of a green screen. That came more towards the end, and might have been exacerbated by the cheesiness of some of the plot and dialogue at that point.

Credit to them, I genuinely didn't see the Ares misdirect coming. I thought Thewlis did a pretty decent job at the different sides of him, but once he had his armour on it all dropped a bit. Once Wonder Woman's power of love upgrade kicked in, I did find myself rolling my eyes.

Other than that though, I enjoyed it. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a good, solid way to fill a couple of hours - probably the best DC film I've seen since The Dark Knight (I still haven't seen BvS, and have little desire to).

I get the weightless point. It's why I thought the slow mo was great by and large, it mostly masked it.

I don't think the movie was anything special like the critics are claiming. I'm generously putting that on how bad recent dc offerings were in comparison.

It's a solid 7 out of 10 with critics offering:

+1 pt for being better than man of steel/bvs
+1 pt for having female lead/director

That said...Gal Gadot is officially my new dream woman. That accent...

It was good, not truly great, but good. Definitely oversold in the reviews, but I knew that was going to happen going in.
