The crowd surrounded Zenzao, holding pitchforks and hammers. A couple people in the back subtly glanced at their phones. Pictures of puppies may or may not have been on them.

“We got you, Zenzao,” someone said. “Give up, or-”

“YOU CAUGHT ME,” Zenzao said, holding up his hands and walking forward. Confused, the crowd parted and Zenzao hopped onto the pyre. “Tie me.”

The crowd looked at each other.

“But-”

“TIE ME.”

They tied him, keeping him at arm’s length. Some would assume because while they weren’t sure if he was diseased, there was something clearly wrong with him. But the truth was they were trying not to look at his chest. Trying very, very hard.

“I am ready to burn,” Zenzao said.

“Zenzao,” someone said hesitantly, holding a match. “You do realize suicide is never the answer-”

“BURN ME.”

They did.

As the flames flickered, the crowd shuffled. More phones were out, but somehow, people weren’t really looking at them.

“I feel bad,” someone admitted. “It shouldn’t end this way.”

A hand was placed on their shoulder.

“That is life,” said the most pious of their number. “Someday we too-”

A phone was thrown at their head.
