Exactly as the title says. I am looking for stories where Voldemort is such a horrifying and seemingly unstoppable opponent that you can see why the people of the Wizarding World fear even his very name. Preferably ones where Dumbledore is also such a powerful wizard that you can see why he is looked to as their only hope.

Pretty much any story where Dumbledore and Voldemort are the magical and intellectual powerhouses that they are supposed to be and not where Voldemort is some crackpot loser and Dumbledore is a senile old man that wants to steal money from Harry's vault like we seem to be getting an undo amount of.

Not the right subforum. Should be in Fanfiction Discussion story search.

Sorry about that, newbie mistake. Is there any way that I can move this thread over there?

Ah, thank you whoever did that.

    I moved it.

I'm also curious to read more of these. Part of the problem here though is that in canon Voldemort is so terrifying because of events that happened prior to the protagonist being born. We missed everything in canon that made everyone so terrified.

I think that's partly why we don't see a lot of authors writing a terrifying Voldemort. Because everyone is already supposed to be terrified of him.

Still nice to see though. Especially since Harry isn't terrified of him in the sense that everyone else is, and it's nice to see an author try to instill that fear.

You have any recs at all from a story you read where something similar happened?

If you mean recommendations that the author put in his notes then none that I can think of at the moment.

The Sacrifices Arc has a Voldemort which gives you a good idea of how he garnered his canon reputation (which remains pretty similar in this story, despite being heavily AU in some ways).

Warnings: slash, interminable angst, extremely long, graphic everything.

Renegade Cause, but DLPrs already know that one.

TL;DR: I imagine Voldemort more as a general than an eldritch horror.

Honestly, when I think of Voldemort, I think two things. First one is POTDK (the unmatched masterpiece when it comes to Voldemort) and second is Voldemort as the enemy canon lacked: a strategist who makes careful, calculated moves, someone who, despite his rotten reputation and propensity for violence still manages to inspire loyalty, because I hate a Voldemort who only rules through fear. I view him as intimidating, but not exactly scary, you know? So a terrifying Voldemort, horror-like, is something I'd read. Unfortunately, horror is a rarely tackled genre in fanfic.

If OP is willing to accept recs about Voldemort as I described him in my post, then I reiterate Renegade Cause. I would also throw in Wastelands of Time. Voldemort has little presence there, but he makes a great "ominous enemy just beyond the horizon". And because I'm a prideful, shallow man, I'll also shill my own story, Lesser Evils.

Tbh though, it's hard to come up with recs for this request because now that I think about it, a well-done Voldemort is an even rarer breed than a well-done Dumbledore.

The Denarian Series a crossover with Dresden Files, you don't have to know Dresden to understand it.

Has more powerful magic in general with a fine Voldemort he is not appearing that much but his powers are impressive the Dumbledore is a standout with great characterization, Voldemort is nothing to write home about in his characterization, but still not bad.

The One he Feared by Taure has also a great "Dumbledore" and Voldemort is not bad but not really focused on.

The Right Hand Path is maybe not what your looking for exactly since it's about Tom Riddle being raised by Merope but it definetly is one of the best Voldemort in Fanfiction he still remains his coreself but through Meropes love he is not a irredeemable monster but a cruel bastard.

The Other Side of the Coin imo the best Voldemort in Fanfiction Dumbledore took him as a apprentice for his war on Grindelwald. Tom Riddle is constantly struggeling with his sanity and seduction to Dark Magic trying to not give in into his "Voldemort" persona but is slowly losing it and getting more insane.

The moment in which he battles his Voldemort persona and loses it sending Fiendfyre through the Room of Requirement was one of the best FF moments imo

Prince of the Dark Kingdoms LV is not bad though I don't love him like everybody else I can see why everybody else likes him that much, since he has motivations and is not a caricature like LV in canon but he feels like to much of a God amongst men to me with the "Earth Loving" him giving him super OP protection.

Really dissapointing there are only 2 or 3 Voldemort which I think were great the other ones are only servicable or terrible. Imo the best Voldemorts are still somewhat Tom Riddle and haven't really gone the deep end yet, he gets far to one dimensional if you go that route.
