Never thought I'd be posting a thread in here, but there you go.

Er - so, I have a sudden craving for AU 'redo' stories. You know the ones, where Harry is sorted into different houses or he has different friends or things like that. Though not ones that straddle canon events and nothing changes, ever - other than mundane, stupid shit. Wrong Boy/Girl-Who-Lived stories are also okay, but only if those are really good. Otherwise, yeah. Nothing totally stupid. They have to be readable and not filled to the brim with cliches.

I've probably read most of them, but lets see. Surprise me with your FFN-fu!

The only recent one I've come across is DrizzleWizzle's series.

It's Harry in Slytherin and is pretty well written with consistent characterization. I put it in almost recommended so you might have read it already.

Has a few cliche's - particularly in the first book - but still well worth reading imo. The series gets better as it continues, so I'd say give it at least until the third book. It's currently on the Twi-Wizard tournament, and the author only used ~132,000 words to get there so at least he's not dragging it out. Updates weekly.

It has stuck pretty close to canon events to this point, but the author said it will break away more in the future.

Path of Decisions by lulu42 is a redo of 1-7 seven years with a Slytherin Harry. It features a slight crossover with Vertigo comics but no knowledge is required to enjoy it. This one is one of my all-time favorite fics.

On the Way to Greatness by mira mirth is another great AU with Slytherin Harry. Both of them are in the library iirc.

A recent one you might not have read is "Hit The Ground Running":

The Horcrux in Harry's head wakes up and begins talking to Harry long before he's ever heard the name Voldemort. Philosopher's Stone AU. Warnings for some instances of child abuse. No pairings.

    Chapters: 16 - Words: 85,602

    Moderately frequent updates so far.

Just read that last one - I'd seen it around, but for whatever reason, I never opened it. It was pretty good - I thought the author did well in capturing some of Rowling's humor and they also did a good job in keeping Harry very much like his canon-self. In saying that, the abuse-factor is annoying and the latest chapters are all about it and nothing else. I'm not sure I like where that is going, to be honest.

For a voice-in-Harry's-head story, Voldemort is surprisingly likable and not annoying as shit, so props to that. Now to read the rest of these that I haven't already seen.

    Keep them coming, people.

Champion by OctaviusOwl has been pretty good so far. It takes place in a Wizarding Britain where Voldemort won and is dictator.

Enveloped in Darkness by Brigade looks to have the makings of a decent Dark!Harry fic. It's one of those fics where Harry's childhood mirrors Tom Riddles. Orphanage, control of his magic before Hogwarts, uses his power to hurt the kids who bully him etc.

Hope this is what you're looking for.

Tried the Drizzle one. Having trouble getting through the first story. The writing isn't bad but there is something lacking. Also, the whole 'Slytherin sticks together in front of the school' duur duur stuff is irritating as hell. I know Harry has never had a friend before, but Draco Malfoy is an asshole - and after having to deal with Dudley for so long, I can't see Harry putting up with someone who is - in Harry's words in canon - even worse than his cousin.

I've already read On The Way to Greatness. Tried Path of Decisions and didn't like the stuff with Death and all that stuff, but that is perhaps a part of the crossover element? I'm going to give it another shot, but not right now.

Enveloped in Darkness... I'm not sure what to think about this. The first chapter was pretty good, but I cringed pretty badly when Harry went to Gringotts. Will have to read further in to see if it gets better.

Anyone else got more stories to share?

HP& the Gift of Memories and sequel. Mid-range almost rec material in my opinion, gets better a few chapters in. There's a lot of divergence eventually.

Oh hell no. Avoid Engulfing Silence's stuff like the plague. This author specializes in writing stories that are 80% filler and completely mediocre.

The biggest problem with those fics is endlessly ranting soapbox-Harry, quite possibly the worst thing in fanfiction. Made infinitely worse by the fact that the author clearly believes in Harry's retarded arguments.

Well, yes. The same is true of 99% of fanfiction. At least this is of a decent length, doesn't have too many technical errors, and isn't afraid to go off the beaten track when it comes to ideas. I certainly never said it was library material :p

Harry going for a run was the first warning bell. His lean, whipcord muscles was the second. Master Wei... well.

Yeah, all the cliches pile up early on, but it does taper off into something resembling an actual story.

He rewrote the first year and he is already out of ideas just like the first time around. The drop in update rate and his move to other fandoms certainly mean he is out of juice.

And what is it with every girl from ice-queen Daphne to that vamp chick and even Mrs. Flamel trying to seduce him?

    CREEPY PEDIOPHILE ALERT!!!

Yes, they're a part of the crossover element and don't really play a major role in the story.

Here A Hufflepuff!Harry. I've read it a long time ago, but I remember enjoying it quite a bit. It's the only decent Huffle! harry I've ever read. It's a comedy, and only gets a tad more serious later. Than the author stopped posting.

Maybe it was for the best, since she was a teen girl and we know what those like to do with Harry and Draco. It has some annoying flaws, but again, I enjoyed it.

Some AU stuff I liked, the first is an actual redo using time- travel. It's also a genderbender, so maybe not to everyones taste. ;-)

I love when people post obvious stories. Syao has been on this site for over 8 years, and is probably well aware of Vincet. Personally, I never got the hype about the story since I don't think it's very good.
