Hey now Seratin, no need to lash out at another fanboydom.

Really though, there are, what, five, maybe seven at a pinch fleshed out characters within the student body. So Fine Balance, I really fail to see your point.

A while back, someone said that the reason they liked HP fanfiction is that canon isn't perfect - the plot holes and lack of character development is like a candy shop for fanfiction writers, and so really, Padma, Daphne or anyone else - it all depends on what you make of it.

That's just you assuming that Padma is just an ordinary, but intelligent, school girl. Many would take the easy road and make her a Hermione without the bossiness, as said, but not all would do that. What about those that don't?

Same goes for characters in the student body that aren't Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny (struggling with that one), Neville, and perhaps Dean, Seamus, Parvati and Lavender, if you are really pushing it. Any pairing without those characters is the author's interpretation, so are you only disliking the pairing because of poor author characterisation?

Side note: It was either Seamus or Dean who said that the Patil twins were the hottest in the year.

EDIT: Boy that sounds so disjointed. This is what I get for trying to debate when I've been up for half an hour.

My point is, while I find it reasonable to have such a 'appreciation group' for pairings like H/Tonks, H/Hermione since they are fleshed out in cannon, and that gives every author a similar starting point, qualities to relate to between fics, AU's notwithstanding.

For pairings like Padma or Daphne that have to be individually invented, there is no common core between stories and thus, since they are just names slapped upon an author's OFC, I can't really see a point to this.

Then again, if the fic in question is well written, then nothing else really matters, I guess.

We write (well I read, others write) fanfiction here. We're not JK Rowling, nor do we proclaim this as the gospel truth in the Harry Potter universe. Someone commented before, it's half the beauty of Harry Potter - all the characters that are most interesting are open to us to explore ourselves.
In the Buffy fanverse, they basically have the tight gang to work on, and so not much ever happens that you haven't read before. Here though, with the glaring inaccuracies and the undeveloped nature of the majority of characters, we can write what we want.
Feel free to have your 'common core' and stick to hardcore canon, but the fact is that we turned to fanfiction because its in many ways more interesting than canon.

Okay, first chapter of that read but I'm becoming put off by the constant bashing of Hermione by the author.

As far as I remember, it was quite fast at the beginning, because the chapters were prewritten, and then it was like every week or every other week, I believe. I think it was stated in the latest chapter that he/she'd try to post again next week.

He. I really didn't think there was any bashing (or maybe I missed something). I mean, Hermione is her usual self (her characterization is spot-on when compared with the respective books from Canon IMO)

The only thing is, at times, where she'd get on everyone nerves in Canon, yet nobody would say anything, here some people express that. Not even very directly -- they just get a bit annoyed.

    I liked it.

That particular part of Hermione's personality, though in my opinion overblown, was pointed out again and again and again within every single chapter except the most recent. He could have just had two-three instances instead of hammering in the same character flaw so many goddamn times.

Still, wondering how it'll develop from now.

Aside from being a condesceding know-it-all, Hermione has no discernable personality traits in canon (unless you count whining and insecurity).

What else would the author write about?

Hermione fucking sucks cactus balls. The way the author has everyone getting pissed off at her annoying ass antics is big good point in this fic. I lol every time the bush-haired cuntfucker gets shot down.

Move this discussion to the library thread. We don't want to detract from the Padma goodness floating about this thread do we?

Just Spotted this one on ff.net

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4323036/1/Gentleman_Usher_of_the_Scarlet_Rod

Summary: Every seventy years members of the Order of the Bath, a British order of chivalry, are being killed off. That is until Harry is brought in to hunt the killer or killers down. Harry/Padma

Its quite nicely written, though Harry appears a bit gormless at the moment.

Pure Lulz at the last couple of sentences.

Ah, I remember reading that. I forgot about mentioning it here.

I'm a bit here and there on it so far. There's not really enough to determine how good or bad it'll be, but since Heather Sinclair is writing it, there is a pretty high chance of high quality work ahead.

Personally, swords don't work for me in HP unless it is the Gryffindor Sword, and used very sporadically. The point of the HP universe is the magic, so I do hope we don't have swordfights in the future - apologies to those who do enjoy that.

Anyway, as said, waiting on it before I give it any rating.

I'm not sure how much the sword will be used... It is a ceremonial thing at the moment, and I can't see Harry using it ninja stylee. Although it seems to have a slightly bigger importance as well.

I can't see sword fights in the future though. I hope the author would have the sense for guns to be used if they have to fight muggle style.

I agree though, more needs to be written before I pass judgement, just thought I'd flag it up for people

I must admit I'm greatly impressed by Neisseria's Rustlings in the Dark. Harry/Padma isn't even one of my favourite ships, yet there is something about the combination of slow, light-hearted buildup to the H/P romance and the mysterious plot that sucks me in.

Despite being one who isn't anti-Hermione, I'm still greatly enjoying this fic, and truth be told, suffering from a bit of withdrawal here.

No other H/P fic have really stood out apart from this, and I sure hope the author can last the distance.

She said that the new chapter will be out by the end of June but she has exams or something so it might not be set in stone.
