I'm in the mood for deviations from canon in the Halfblood Prince or Deathly Hallows. Hopefully with competent Harry that isn't afraid to fight back.

For instance, Harry beating the snot out of Malfoy on the train instead of getting his nose broken by Malfoy. I mean, c'mon it's Malfoy. He's the biggest ponce in the Hp world.

Or it could be during the chase from Privet Drive on Sirius' bike with Hagrid. Hedwig get's killed. I dunno about you guys, but Harry to me gave a crappy reaction. Hedwig was his pet/companion. If someone killed my dog I'd gut them or try to kick their face in at the very least. It would be good to see Harry attacking to kill because of them killing Hedwig.

Deviations that start small. Believable things that could have happened at that point in canon, and then the stories divert from there.

Sixth Year: The Steps Toward the End
After losing Sirius, Harry resolves to himself to become stronger, revive the DA and create his own 'army'. In one of the most trying year of his life, Harry will need everything he and his friends can offer to overcome the trails and tribulations before him.

And I remember enjoying a fullblown rewrite of Deathly Hallows several years back but I can't recall its name. It might be in the Library.

Duality

This is a WIP, severe deviation (read AU) from the HBP book. You'll either enjoy it or not. Personally, I'm kind of split on the whole thing, but I keep finding myself reading every new chapter that pops out.

 

Stopped after the first chapter. Drinking, smoking, sex-god Harry isn't my kind of fic.

 

Yes, the smoking bit annoys me as well to no end. Hence the 'severe deviation' warning. Well, that and other things.
