Are there any fics where Ron and Harry stay friends and Hermione is cut out of the trio?

I'm just a little sick of the Hermione-Sue always being there for Harry and Ron being completely irredeemable.

 

I know your pain, fanfic has made me despise Hermione. Harry can be a Death Eater raised by malfoy, yet will always end up her friend in AU's....

Renegade Cause by silens is about all I can remember at the moment for stories where Hermione is cut out and Ron remains a friend, but Ron isn't really in that fic much...

 

I'm suddenly hit with what is probably a very shitty plot bunny:

Rather than hyper-incompetent and insecure Ron of canon, who can play chess and makes a passable goal-keeper later on . . .

. . . have a hyper-driven Ron. He's always hated being compared to his brothers, so, well fuck it, he's going to work his ass off to be better than the rest of them--so much so, he gets sorted into Slytherin. Driven and ambitious as he is, he has to work much harder than most of his classmates to keep up, but he will not be upstaged.

Make sure his sorting into Slytherin actually affects his family's opinion of him and subsequently their relationship. Have Ron end up being the one who slowly goes dark and pulls harry along with him.

Hermione's presence in the fic as anything more than an extant character is purely optional.

 

I can think of two off the top of my head, and they're both Harry in Azkaban fics!

It seems that the only way Harry will choose Ron over Hermione, is if Hermione testifies against Harry when he is sent to prison on trumped on charges.

 

That makes me really, really sad. Especially since I read those two fics already.

I used to like Hermione, but Harmonians destroyed her character completely by making her the worst sue imaginable. Now I shudder every time she's mentioned. It just made me crave a nice bromance between Ron and Harry, with Hermione far, far away.

 

Well, in that case, I'm gonna be a whore for a moment and rec my own fic (the one on my sig). Ron is among my favorite characters and Hermione is literally out of the picture. The Harry and Ron relationship isn't the central focus, but it is important to the story. I wish there were more fics I could rec, but I really can't think of many others.

 

Nah, there are others as well.

For instance Bellerophon30's first fic:

Harry Potter and the Final Straw
Complete. A 6th year story. Harry takes a look at his life and doesn't like what he sees, so he decides to declare his independance of Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix and fight the war on his own terms.

It's complete with 35 chapters and 300k words.


"Betrayed" has Ron only as a small side character. There is another long Azkaban fic with proactive!Ron which I can't remember right now and a few Indy!Harry with Hermione spying for Dumbledore while Ron supports Harry.

 

Write this. Now. Ron turning harry dark. It must be done.

 

You know, you could easily leave out the AU Sorting for Ron and the dark path and whatnot, and still have a very believable way for Harry to become a much better student and much more competent wizard. I'd probably read it.

 

Slytherin!Ron but canon!everyone else is a story I have never read, It is interesting idea and I probably would read it if it was done halfway decent. But there is probably a reason it has never been done :/

 

Robst did it in one of his stories. Too bad his characterization and plotting is utterly inept. If I remember correctly, Ron says/does stupid things against Harry until he gets raped up the anus by a troll. Cliche writing combined with utterly inept antagonists and Super!Hermione = shitty story.

Tangent! I loathe Emma Watson. She made the character of Hermione far more attractive than she was in the novels.

 

Wasn't that the fic where Ron raped Hermione, and when she aborted it she was sent to death, while Harry was sent to death for killing Ron? Then they go back in time and the two get married in their first year?

I just found this thread, so I guess this is necro-ing.

But I've run into a few fics like this, where Ron got sorted into Slytherin but the rest of the characters were canon and it semi-explored how this one change affected other things.

Usually he ends up friends with Draco and has an adversarial relationship with Harry while still trying to do good, or he tries to maintain friendships with both.

The most recent one I found took the trouble to start off right from the beginning instead of the 5th or 6th year, and is the most interesting.

But it's a nice idea.

Well, if anybody's still interested, there's actually been a complete fic posted between now and then. Gryffindors Never Die. Probably not library worthy, characterizations/interactions are a bit spotty, but still decent.

 

I found Gryffindors Never Die to be pretty funny, though I didn't quite like the very end with the massive shitstorm of children that needed to be named after every character.
