So I'm having trouble running some games on higher res settings. This baffles me since I just upgraded my computer, and I've gotten some good hardware.

I'm computer illiterate, so any suggestions/comments would be helpful.

An example: One game says that I only have 64mb of Vram available, and the game requires 312mb Vram to run on a higher setting.

Computer basic specs: i5 3570k quad core processor
Nvidia GeForce 560 Ti graphics card
    2x4GB of RAM

Hard Drives: 256MB SSD+2GB HD (Games are installed on the 2GB)

I'm going to assume that the drives are a 256 GigaByte SSD and a 2 TeraByte HD, or you wouldn't have room to load more than Windows itself.

Since the GEForce is an expansion card, we'll start there- is your monitor plugged in to the card or the graphics port of the motherboard? I'm guessing it's plugged into the motherboard and you're running off the Intel 4000 CPU-based graphics. They aren't bad for productivity work, but you probably want to use the 1 GB of vram on the expansion card.

So, switch to using the card. You may need a different cable, since the GEForce has only HDMI and DVI ports, whereas most motherboards only have a VGA. If your monitor can't connect with a DVI cable, you might consider replacing that boat anchor.

Load the drivers for the GEForce 560 Ti if you haven't already. Get the latest if you have the time and patience.

    Restart.

    Load games.

Destroy the infidels with a vengeance.

Alright, so my monitor doesn't have an HDMI port. So there's no way to reap the benefits of the graphics card without such a monitor?

DVI is more common for PC monitors, and there are often adapters included to convert the DVI signal down to VGA, but you're better off finding a monitor that uses DVI. I bought a cheap 22" Gateway from Office Depot when my old Dell broke a button. I think it was $120.

I am incredibly dumb. Problem solved. I plugged in the DVI cord into the motherboard, not the graphics card. I still need to learn how to insert slot A into slot B apparently >.>

Still having issues with not being able to start Civ5 or SC2 though for some reason...posted that problem in an earlier thread.
