I made a worldbuilding document setting out a version of the wizarding world with a small population, highly integrated into the Muggle world.

    Found here.

Some of you may find this of interest. I have decided to use this world for Marked As His Equal as a way to add an additional layer of novelty to the fic.

One problem that I have with Harry Potter when it comes to comparing the strengths of various different characters against each other is specialisation. By all rights, Flitwick should be better than Dumbledore at charms, or Kingsley should be able to beat him in a duel, because those characters live and breath their respective fields of magic. We see this somewhat with Snape and Voldemort. Snape is the better oclumens, and a far superior potioneer, but I feel like we should see this more often in the story. 'Peerless' witches and wizards as you put it are the best of the best. At everything. In our world, it's very rare for even the most skilled academic to be at the top of their field in more than one discipline, or for a world champion or Olympian to be able to compete at the same level in several different sports. Obviously canon is what it is, and I'm not saying that you're wrong for classifying them the way that you did, but it's always bothered me a little bit.

Anyway, I'll read the rest of your document another time, but I've enjoyed what I've seen so far. Marked as His Equal also looks promising, even if it's early days yet. Are you planning on pre/cross posting it to the WBA section?

I think the difference is that I don't really consider Charms and Transfiguration and the Dark Arts to be separate fields. There is a single body of knowledge - the theory of magic - which underpins your ability in all of them. There is then another layer of knowledge, being the theory of that specific branch of magic, but it supervenes on the more fundamental knowledge.

18 inches of parchment on my desk by 9am explaining the difference between a colour-changing charm and transfiguring an object into a different colour.

This system seems quite well thought out except for wizards essentially allowing themselves to be ruled by muggles. Perhaps if they were sufficiently weak or relied upon muggles to live it would make sense, but per the document the average wizard is competent and largely self-sufficient.

7,500 people is hardly a large voting block across and entire nation and surely the type of wizards that seek out positions of power (such as Minister) would chafe at the notion of being ruled by someone that is undoubtedly less powerful.

If wizards are so involved in muggle government, it seems unrealistic that they would allow muggles self-determination or leave elections up to chance. It would be far more plausible if elections were held for Minster for Magic but the Ministry essentially controlled/rigged/fixed the muggle elections into whatever was deemed most ideal for the wizarding populace.

In this sort of situation, muggles aren't really powerless against a potential wizard apartheid state.

For one thing you would need all wizards to agree to the proposal, which wouldn't happen and hence your own limited populace isn't united. Second, just by sheer volume muggles would be able to put up a pretty decent fight. The average wizard doesn't even neccerarily know the shield charm, remember. And the heavy hitters are all human and vulnerable to snipers, say.

So the way I see it a world like this would have a similarish government structure to real governments, with the exception that all wizards would be under heightened surveillance due to the ease with which they could commit crimes. They would be high in demand for their skills too so wizards would by sought after by industry and the government alike.

On that note, the one significant difference probably would be security. You would need a wizard police force in order to catch magic criminals, so those departments would probably be lead or dominated by wizards to some extent.

There could also be some discontent in the populace, with wizards being unhappy with govt restrictions on their magic and muggles being unhappy by how certain people have their fortunes assured, simply by being born with magic, not to mention the govt being able to sicc magic on common people.

Isn't that just like 1 and 3/4 pages of regular letter sized paper?
