I'm a little conflicted about it.

There is a lot that I really like in these short scenes they included:
    - Superman as an inspiration and saving people.
    - Clark as a dork and completely different in his behavior from Superman.
    - Lois and Clark's chemistry.

Some things I will need the movie to say if they work for me or not:
    - The costume and the symbol.
    - The other superheroes.
    - Lex.
    - Krypto.

I'm glad that it looks bright and colorful. Superman shouldn't be dark, gritty, and hopeless.

I really loved Man of Steel (though the later movies sucked), but I'm very excited for this one. Love the kinda campy vibe. Only character i'm kinda concerned about in this one is Lex.

Clark definitely feels like what will be the millenial/Gen Z version of the character.

The trailer is that, but surprisingly enough Superman is gloomy and depressed in a lot of his scenes. I'm not sure if there is even one that he is openly positive.

Nicholas Hoult can play Lex for sure, but I'm not sure what Gunn's plans for him are since he gave him Otis and Eve Teschmacher as his sidekicks.

It's James Gunn so we know what kind of movie we're getting.

I think it will be a blast and good fun to watch.

I also think it will be too silly/absurd/camp to really occupy my mind for any serious period after walking out of the cinema.

According to Gunn it's going to be a lot less comedic than his other movies. The trailer definitely is even with Krypto. Which is both good and bad. Good because sometimes challenging yourself can bring even better results and Superman could be that for Gunn. Bad because it may turn out that Gunn simply is not as good as he needs to be for this film if he limits his antics.

It looked like a shit-ton of characters are going to be introduced. Gunn managed it with Guardians, I hope he does so with this one. I'm just not optimistic with so many at in one movie. Are they all going to get one line and then be ignored or just be in the background as so many movies tend to do? Is there a run time released yet?

I suspect that they will get more than one line, but according to Gunn they're supporting characters. They won't be getting scenes beyond a short introduction and whatever they are needed for in Superman's narrative because I doubt he added anyone just for cameos.

Gunn said lately he is not finished with it and can't say exactly, but less than two and a half hours.

It'd be nice if they treated the audience as mostly familiar with the characters and had the various supers on screen in line with that - no need for an origin story or an introduction to each other, just imply the necessary, and then get on with it.

The old theme music made me smile, but apart from that, nothing in the trailer did much to hook me.

I wish they had done something novel with the aesthetic, like retrofuturism, or something akin to the trenchcoat 40's vibe of the animated 90s DC.

I've come to hate how often comic book movies reboot their franchises. It's very true to the original source material, sure, but I have no appetite for it anymore.

Sometimes flogging a dead horse for more money also produces a decent film, and I accept that (the latest Deadpool being a good example), but it's frustrating that the default approach has been to reboot and recast rather than just giving a completely new IP a chance.

    Kindness is punk rock.

    Solid 8/10.

Hoult ended up being probably my favorite live-action version of Luthor surprisingly.

I saw an interview about the plot of this movie being about Superman being an illegal immigrant and it's about politics. This was from Gunn himself. Is that what it's about? If so, I have no interest whatsoever in seeing it. I get enough of that shit from real life. I go to movies to get away from real life. Can you expound about why 8/10?

8/10 because of some of the pacing and Ma/Pa were essentially caricatures of how west coast elite think Kansas farmers act.

The politics...welll...it's not the sole focus of the movie by any means. The bigger political piece is that there is a very clear parallel countries between Israel and palestine that plays a factor.

That said, the message is distinctly "Kindness is worth aspiring too." Superman is truly the boy scout in this film who is genuinely a good person. Imo, it's only overtly political if you think being a good person is political.

Some spoilers without going too deep:

The chief conflict is Lex versus Superman. Lex Luthor tries to turn the world against superman because superman intervened in the Pseudo Israel/Palestine Countries. It's probably the best and most intelligent version of Lex I've seen on screen. There is the character tension of a truly good person with immense power existing in a world of nuance? Ultimately the message of the film is choose kindness. It never addresses Superman as an immigrant. It never really does the whole identity politics thing imo aside from "Am I a son of Kryptonians or a son of Ma and Pa Kent"?

Supporting cast was awesome imo and really enjoyed Mr. Terrific and Guy Gardner.

    I'd give it a 7 maybe.

Fun fights. Actors have a lot of chemistry. Clark Kent is once again a proper dork.

But honestly, bit of a mid start to an IP revival. Has nothing novel to say and lacks any and all interesting character development.

If I hold it up to Marvel's origin flicks in comparison, I'd put it in the ShangChi & Ant-Man tier.

Better than anything the mainline DCU has put out in years though, so I'll take it.

Only thing I'll disagree with is this line. I think the core message is something that speaks to the cultural moment and heavily needed. The movie is a protest to the current status of meanness and cynicism in the world.

Seeing a lot of this going round:

Having been a bit sceptical about the whole franchise reboot, I was wary going in, even after being impressed by the trailers.
Then, before the opening scrawl had finished, I had a grin on my face, and it was there for basically the rest of the movie. If you'd sat me down and asked me to sketch out my perfect Superman movie, you'd probably end up with something like this. It isn't flawless - my main gripe is that I don't love the apparent nature of Krypton in this version, although I don't hate it either - but it's comfortably my favourite comic book movie in a long time.
