I just read the author's other story "No Fate", behind same login wall. I guess I'll skip Ghost of Privet Drive. No Fate was pretty engaging and short enough to not be too much of a reading burden (75K before being abandoned a little before the likely climax, yet I felt ok about imagining the rest without reading it). Its blurb:
Seems Harry got all his memory of magic removed so is a muggle as far as he is concerned. He's thrown out of Hogwarts but removed from the Dursleys and under better fostering, completes secondary school and joins the Army.

The writing and depicition of army life is very good, and a few interesting elements come into the story, like Hermione being under a curse that removes her emotions, making her something like Commander Data. Harry gets pulled into the wizarding war, which unfortunately leads into one of the more annoying HP fanfic tropes, fighting the Death Eaters using muggle military weapons. There is a chapter or so where I thought the writing lacked technique (too much exposition through dialogue from robo-Hermione) but other chapters don't suffer as much from this.

The military-vs-wizards stuff is done ok, less tedious than in say Divided and Entwined by Starfox5. It's just unfortunate that it is used much at all. One of the better touches is Harry getting some house elves serving under him:

I was going to review No Fate but I think I'll just leave this as a comment. I'll rate it 2.5/5 due to having some good bits, some cringe bits, slow pacing in retrospect, and being abandoned just before the big caper is launched.

Actually enjoying this story despite, as Ched said, all the things that should ruin it. I would never normally sign up to read about a SI that seemingly never manages to even reach Hogwarts, and yet...

Great writing, sadly more standout these days amidst the rising sea of AI slop. I do think it would've been a far more engaging tale if Mal hadn't gotten all his deus ex machina benefits from Voldemort in the beginning. Robbed the story of pretty much all tension since Mal never really had to struggle for anything.

Could talk about how he's always right and correcting all those dumb, silly wizards with their pre-conceived notions and all that jazz, but I knew what I was getting into with the SI tag. The British lore was sweet.
