    I love fairy tales.

Not the Disney stuff, that's a poor imitation.

I'm talking about the classic stuff here, Grimms' Fairy Tales, Hans Christian Andersen's stories, One Thousand and One Nights, and so on.

This is why I started reading Harry Potter in the first place, it looked to me like fairy tale.

    Consider this:

    - Main hero is an orphan.
    - Main hero has an evil aunt/stepmother.
    - Main hero is mistreated by his relatives/guardians.
    - Main hero is initially poor and doesn't have much, but eventually gets filthy rich and influential.
    - The story features magic and magical creatures.
    - A prophecy is involved.
    - Love conquers all in the end.

Also, if you believe Taure (and I do), Magic runs on fairy tale logic, cannot be explained with regular science and overrides regular laws of physics.

Imagine the series as it is now, but if Harry was female and the story was set in the middle ages. Classic fairy tale.

I may be wrong however, which is why I'm making this thread as I want to read the opinions of others.

You could start by giving a definition of what is a typical fairytale. Then we could start comparing.

HP is a modern YA series with popular tropes. Lion, Witch and an Old Wardrobe had a prophecy too.

So did Matrix. And there was even a fairy godmother of sorts involved. Neo was mistreated by his machine guardians. No mention of parents. Started with nothing, but then people come to him bearing gifts. Undeniably, he's influential. In the first film Trinity's declaration of love kickstarts him into asskicking. The story ends via deus ex machina.

    Is Matrix a fairytale? ;)

Again, we need to know what makes a "typical fairytale" to draw a conclusion.

And I wish people would stop hating on Disney, like it's some douchey hipster thing.
