For the last couple of weeks I've been bingeing on Fallout: New Vegas, and earlier today I downloaded Fallout and Fallout 2 from gog.com.

I would really like to read a good Fallout fic but I don't feel like wading through a shit-ton of F!Courier/Boone and F!LoneWanderer/Charon romance abortions.

    Please help.

Only two I can think of are New California Dreaming, which wasn't anything special from what I remember reading of it, and Fallout: Equestria, which was great, but will heavily depend on whether you like My Little Pony or not. And if you don't then I'd suggest trying it anyway.

The Fallout fandom is oddly barren from what I've seen.

I started New California Dreaming, but it felt really bland to me and it annoys me when authors don't bother to use actual quotation marks.

I've never seen MLP but I may still give the fic a shot.

It's been so popular that people are buying physical hardcover copies of it, knowing full well that they can read it for free online.

Besides being stupid, I'm not even sure that's legal.

By the way, I wouldn't suggest reading any of the "expanded universe" fics for FO:E. I haven't heard good things.

When I read Fallout:Equestria I had not seen the tv show or played Fallout and I still thought it was amazing. Easily in my top five of fanfiction ever written.

The Modus Operandi series by commandocucumber is a pretty good read.

The butterfly by Setrus is pretty good. It's a novelization of FO3 and, in my opinion, it's a good one. Writing is a bit weak at times but I still enjoy it. 3/5ish.

I'll second Fallout: Equestria and Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons, its 'sequel' that takes place at the same time in a different location.

Both stay true to the Fallout universe, but transpose it to a post-Apocalyptic MLP world. The original bases itself on Fallout 3 while Project Horizons follows New Vegas, kinda. They're also really freaking long.

There are also a ton of side stories that aren't quite up to the quality/length of FE/FE:pH, but are interesting nonetheless. Pink Eyes is about a sentient ghoul filly just wandering around doing nice things, despite being shot a lot. Kinda funny, though not my usual type of fic.

I hear that Fallout: Equestria - Heroes is pretty good as well, though I haven't read that one yet. It's also a direct sequel to the original Fallout: Equestria.

Oh, and there are the puns. All of the puns.

As a big Fallout fan, I can tell you you're pretty much out of luck when it comes to Fallout fics from what I know. Considering how interesting the setting is it's a bit odd how bad most fics in the fandom are. A large portion of stories are Charon romance stories, and he's literally a zombie for fucks sake. Or Butch slash fics - because nothing says I love you like bullying through the entirety of your childhood.

Anthony recommended the Modus Operandi series (here's a link to the first story in the series by the way) and it's alright, but nothing special. I lost interest after reading the second story in the series and never finished the trilogy because I remember getting pretty bored reading it.

I remember enjoying The Gift of Greatness but it updates pretty slowly and might even be abandoned. It's a LW/Sarah Lyons (the story is also from both their perspectives) fic but they haven't even really interacted with each other yet. The Lyons Pride was written pretty well though and there was some bullshit about the LW being the physical embodiment of the devil (or an angel? I can't remember really, but it was kind of weird).

There was also Wasteland Sheriff which was the first fanfic I've ever read, and I haven't read it since. So although I remember really liking it could be pretty fucking terrible to be honest. Also it's deader than dead (last update was in 2009) but it's about 130k words so it could still be worth reading to you.

I haven't read Fallout: Equestria, mainly because it involves MLP, but I might have to try it out after how people are going on about it here. Maybe.

You want fics that are alive then? Well, there is Wanderers Diary( https://m.fanfiction.net/s/9128055/1/ ) which is pretty good and recently completed. I think there is a sequel in the works. If you read crossovers you can try Dead World ( https://m.fanfiction.net/s/8601250/1/) , aPrototype X-over, but its nothing amazing. Dont know how active it is,but at least it had updates in 2013. Those two are in the library though, so you have ptobably already read them. Other than that there is Maybe, youll think of me (https://m.fanfiction.net/s/8680462/1/ ), some kind of interactive SI. It seems a bit like a wish fulfillment fic to me, but otherwise its pretty good.
