This show deserves its own thread imo. Trailer for season 3. A bit spoilerish but really excited for this season. Glad to see they are trying to resolve some of the drama from season2.

Ah Sorry Ched! We'd talked about it a lot in other Tv shows thread and Discord, but yes needed more info here in thread.


I think I'd point to the following points I really like:

1. The nolstagia bait is handled extremely well. Yes, it relies on some nolstagia to sell the show, but it's all in the service of furthering an excellent story.

2. The characters. All of the characters are really enjoyable, even those you love to hate. Zabka has done a very good job of a man out of time and a redemption story. And Xolo as Miguel is really the heart of the show. He would be the titular "Karate Kid" of this show if that's what the show was called.

3. The action is amazing and well choreographed.

4. I think the show is an excellent critique of both toxic masculinity and "snowflake" educational policies.

One thing I dislike:

1. The teen drama can be a bit CWish at times, but over all it's not a huge detriment.

 

Not to spoil too much but Johnny is definitely a child of the 80s…and all that entails. And yet he definitely undergoes a great deal of character development as a result of his relationship with miguel.

At the same time, you have school policies of like avoiding micro aggressions/having safe spaces that are shown to be ineffective in the face of those who want to do harm.

There’s a great scene at a Parent/Teacher conference after a fight where the parents ask “Where were the teachers?” And the response is pretty humorous.

 

The CW teen drama was was why I stopped watching. I watched one or two seasons but it seemed like that was becoming the main focal point of the show. Did that ever get better?

 

I felt season 3 was much better in that regard.

season two ended on a very intense note.

The CW. The channel with Supernatural/Arrow/Flash etc. basically dumb teenage romance arcs.

 

Fantastic. That's a good enough reason for me to try it again to get back into it.

Ah, Arrow and The Flash. Two shows I also loved... for about two seasons. Which was why I dropped Cobra Kai so quickly -- felt like it was going down the same CW death-spiral. Hope you're right and this show doesn't do that.

 

There are moments where it feels like it’s going to head that direction but never descends to that level imo. Season 2 was the worst of it.

 

I think early in season 2 was when I stopped for that reason. Will give it another go, thanks for the overview.

 

Season 4 gonna get crazy.

I'm at the point where I kinda hate everything about Cobra Kai save for the growing friendship between Johnny and Daniel. Like, the kid focused plots have all devolved into melodramatic nonsense. I'll keep watching because I'm invested, but definitely not as invested as I was in Season 1.

 

New season! I thought it lagged a little in the middle, but God if there was another season I'd binge it in a goddamned heartbeat. I love karate melodrama. Terry Silver fucking killed it.

 

Overall great season. Some meh moments and kids are still weakest part of the show but I’m psyched for next season.

 

Season 5 was really strong. Better than Season 2&3, but not sure I'd say it was as good as 1&4. There were several elements that were pretty weak. The ending was fun, but completely just out of the blue and not set up really well. It felt very.. "Oh shit we've run out of episodes."

They lessened a lot of the stupid drama this season. Nice to see Johnny actually being a fully functional person finally.
