I bought the Deus Ex bundle from steam, and after it installed I tried to play it. During the set-up options, however, it asked me which graphics card to use (this is a laptop with 2 graphic cards, an integrated one, then a radeon 6650 2gb) but it only gave me the option of selecting the integrated one. I tried to manually force the computer to use my radeon (through the configurable graphics section on Catalyst), which didn't work -it still would not allow me to select the radeon card- and also by manually disabling the integrated card.

When I disable the integrated card, it tells me that my radeon card doesn't support directx 9c 3d. Is this game that hard on the specs that I can't play it on this machine? Or is it because I'm not getting the game to use the right card, and that is causing all the problems? I've already tried to google it, and a few others have had this problem. A few people on nvidia cards could solve it by making a profile, which also doesn't work. Anyone here got an idea what I can do?

Are you talking about Deus Ex, or Deus Ex: HR?

Either way, I've played both on my laptop, which has a Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB. Your 6650 should work.

I'd suggest disabling your integrated video card through the BIOS. If you turn it off there, then it's completely out of the picture. Every OS and application will run through the 5870 alone.

You can do this at boot. If your BIOS doesn't give you an option to disable the integrated graphics, then look at your BIOS manufacturer or motherboard [google them] for ways to access an Advanced BIOS menu, if one exists. It's often kept hidden so that people don't mess with things they don't understand. If you can't disable it in the Advanced BIOS menu, then I suppose you'll have to find another way.

I'm having the exact same problem...my graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 560Ti. I tried downloading drivers...didn't work. This is for Deus Ex: HR.

Tried it in both HR and ML, both have the same problem. I'll try disabling the integrated card in the BIOS. How is that different from disabling the card in device manager though?

Because my laptop is an acer, the actual drivers from ATI aren't supported by my card (what? Not sure why....) And according to the acer website and the autodetect on my p.c. they are. I will check again to be sure.

Ill also check if I can manually install directx9 3d whatever it is called when only my radeon is enabled.

edit: I tried to download is manually, and the downloader told me that my current version of directx (11) is better. Since Midknight is using the same card, I know that the game is able to run on this card.

Sorry bro I was responding to Foo about the 560ti. I also run Deus Ex on an Acer with a 6850 ATI card in it though. Never tried to update the graphics drivers yet, but it runs DEHR on medium just fine.

I updated the drivers on the graphics card, as well as catalyst (they come as one big bundle anyway) still no change. I've never had this problem on a game that doesn't use a set-up, so it's very frustrating that the only reason my laptop won't automatically switch to the better card is because this program is telling it to use the inferior one.

It disables it at a lower level, so that even Windows can't see it.

As a personal example, I've got a trackpad on my laptop which I hate. If I disable it through the device manager, then Windows still sees it and reactivates it. The only way to lock it out completely is to disable it in the BIOS.

Kill your integrated video in the BIOS. Don't let Windows even have the option of using it.

I'm in the BIOS now. In the advanced section, I can choose between (under the video config. Settings) special feature "enabled" and "disabled" for a special feature called switchable graphics function. If I disable it, it will use the integrated card. The same choice (if the function is enabled) is present on the "main" menu under the options of switchable and integrated. However, if I modify the special feature function, this option disappears.

I reset everything to default for now.

edit: It may just be that this card is too weak to run the game, and it is switching correctly. I tried "canyourunit.com" which has been pretty accurate for me, and it says that my card (Which is somehow could not identify) had 0 mb of video RAM, which I haven't found any information to dispute. I'm going to see if this game can run on my home PC, but if not i'll leave it as a lost cause. Thank you for all your help though.

You know what, I was wrong about my video card for my Acer. It's not a 6850, it's a 6550M 1gb, which is a step down from yours actually Wild, and I can run it in medium, can run Skyrim in medium as well. Got to be something else.

I've downloaded the latest NVIDIA drivers, which is 301.42WHQL. However, I'm still getting the same error.

You also have to update your integrated graphics card drivers, which are the ones that do the "hand-off" so to speak, apparently. Not sure if that solves the issue here yet.

Fixed the issue myself by going into settings, and turning off fullscreen and directx11. After the game started running smoothly, I re-entered fullscreen and directx11 and i think it must be using my good card.
