Frank Herber's award-winning bestselling SF novel

You are correct. Can you imagine a ff where voldie banishes harry with some spell (insert random latin word that people cant bother to look up) and he ends up on Arrakis where he become the muad dib. Can you see the fedaykin against the DE's? The mind wobbles.

Err... no. I love Dune, but HP is a completely different thing.

why is it a completely different thing? Are they not both Messiah's? How is the wierding way that different from magic? Ok, so they cant throw bonebreaking curses or AK's. Anyway, it was just something I thought would be interesting.

Dune is basically a philosophical work of literature, dealing with subjects such as religion, self-empowerment, politics, etc... By rolling it with HP into an average action/adventure 'fic', much of Herbert's message will be lost; Especially in the hands of some preteen writer, who would concetrate on action and worm rides, scraping out all the boooring philosophical stuff he/she didn't understand. But it's this 'stuff' that makes Dune into the book it is. And I'm pretty sure no FF writer would be able to replicate it in a satisfying maner. Thus, when writing FF, better leave serious stuff such as Dune alone, and play around with some more down-on-earth settings.

You know, sitting here with my cold adult beverage, I have to think that you are entirely correct. If someone did try it would be a pale comparison. I just get tired of the hp/buffy/gay-highlander/etc... ad nauseum stuff that seems to be running rampant. Which is the main reason I started reading the indie harry/dark harrry.
So, I yield to your argument. Thanks for the good conversation.

I have found myself becoming extremely offended by this thoughtless post in a number of ways.

Firstly, take into account the subject matter, as I feel this is the most relevant. We are talking about two fictitious works which vary mainly in their target audience and how they are perceived by their readers.

'Dune' is plainly aimed at adults, it is well written with long prose-ridden scenes, most described to the nth degree and it plainly encompasses and embraces difficult and complex topics which can be read and interpreted in a myriad of ways.

'Harry Potter' on the other hand is clearly aimed at a much younger target audience, mostly children and young teens. That it has such a large adult following was not something many people happened to expect or envision, nevertheless, despite it's very simplistic views and often clear-cut situations, the topics it actually refers to are much more adult than they appear.

I refer to, of course, child abuse, racism, genocide, murder, terrorism, coercion and betrayal, just to begin with. It may be prettied up with magic and children having adventures, but the core of it remains quite disturbing.

However, aside to that, the matter remains thus. 'Dune' is a piece of literature...as is 'Harry Potter'. A piece of literature is anything that is formed from letters. Its modern meaning is much more varied than that, but even so, both 'Dune' and 'Harry Potter' can be described as 'literary fiction' almost to the same degree, since neither are thought of as classical literature, as most would agree the works of Charles Dickens are.

As to the 'philosophical' bit...that depends completely on the reader to distinguish and/or decide, and can be easily dismissed by another reader as a mere matter of opinion. Truthfully speaking, the philosophy of modern literature is not yet fully formed, and is mostly composed of people arguing as to how to classify each piece of work, be it fiction or non-fiction.

The basics of classifying a piece of literature, either modern or classical, therefore falls to it's own advertiser and publicist, with quite a few leaps being taken and a broad stroke being used to describe a piece of work, usually with the sole aim of enticing people to buy their work when it is for sale.

    As to the other matter;

Not every fanfiction writer is a mere babe-in-arms, and not every writer wishes to be tarred with the same brush.

I also do not appreciate your idea that a fanfiction writer, simply because he or she writes fanfiction, would be unable to appreciate the nuances in a serious piece of work, mutating it into a shallow and meaningless piece of drivel not worth the screen it takes up when deciding to incorporate it into fanfiction.

Moreover, fanfiction is just that - fiction written for and by the enjoyment of fans, an unofficial work done solely for their own pleasure and/or the pleasure of those they deign to share it with. It is not something which is officially sanctioned, nor is it constrained by the 'official' version, ie, canon.

Replicating 'Dune' is not usually the goal of a fanfiction writer who writes 'Dune' fics, which could be more accurately described as plagiarism, just as not all writing is simply 'playing around'.

Added to that, not all crossovers are written merely for the sake of something to do, with little attention paid to the basis of each work involved. Nor are the cores of each canon universe discarded for the pleasure or convenience of the fanfiction author/ess for nothing other than laziness.

Your views on this show themselves to be narrow and biased, which, while of no concern to me, does represent some modicum of worry for those you inevitably come into contact with.

I wonder; how many budding writers you have disparaged to the point they no longer wish to test themselves and practice their talents?

What gives you the right to state what may or may not, or should and should not be explored by fans wanting to express their views and ideas inside a world they admire and feel drawn to?

Much of what I have written above I would like to apply to you, if for no greater reason than your response and the form it took.

One, a reply does not constitute a conversation. Neither does a series of replies in a thread.

Two, an opinion is not an argument. An argument is based upon a matter on which two or more parties cannot agree upon.

What you read is up to you, as are your views on the works you come across. However, disliking a genre of fanfiction is no reason for you to agree with a person who presents their idea merely to dispense judgment on writers he or she has never come across is both foolhardy and insipid in many aspects.

If you are tired of reading a subject then avoid it, as much of the general population tends to do.

There are many aspects of fanfiction to which I am not drawn, and those which I do not like for personal reasons...but I have never spoken out in the manner you both have done.

Wow, it seems that these days whatever you say, some sissy will get offended.

I'm really not into this discussion, since I'm far from an expert on this subject. But here are just a few points that caught my eye.

Yeah sure, many things can be labeled as 'literature' - from romantic pulp-fiction novels that lonely housewives buy in supermarkets, to abstract works such as "Waiting for Godoe" or Kafka's "Trial". Are they all the same?

Personally, I roughly divide all fiction books on 'stories', that are mostly intended to be fun (that's where Harry Potter is and where FF should be kept) and 'literature', where the main point is to... well, make a point.

It's my opinion that making fanfiction out of 'literature' would only ruin the message that the original author wanted to send. Thus, I refuse to read (or write) any fanfiction of the works that have strong 'smell' of 'literature'.

Personally, I don't know any FF writer who constantly writes what I’d classify as 'literature'. True, some stories had gotten close to a true art, but they are in such a small minority, that they might as well be deemed an exception that proves the rule:

    fanfiction = pulp fiction.

Dune's philosophical monologues, long sentences and overall style are equally important part of the "Dune experience", as the plot itself. Mangling this up would be the same as, for instance, having Legolas talk like a Californian surfer. That's definitely not something I'd be interested in reading.

I can just imagine poor 10dedfish, once a young budding author, full of idealism and hope. He already had the entire plot of his revolutionary Dune crossover planned out and half of the chapters outlined. Yes, the future looked bright for our young whippersnapper.

But alas, dark clouds arched over our young hero. In his innocent naivety, he asked the evil, devious IP82 what he thought of his idea, not knowing that he had just sold his soul to the DEVIL REINCARNATE HIMSELF. With a maniacal glint in his virtual eyes, IP82 outright told this foolish soul that he in fact DIDN'T LIKE his idea. With a nasty sneer forming on his lips, he even had the gall to say that, in his personal opinion, such story SHOULDN'T BE WRITTEN AT ALL.

Poor innocent 10dedfish stared numbly at his screen, feeling his heart freeze over, before breaking into million pieces. Holding back tears of desperation, he stumbled out of his chair and run off to a nearest bar, so intent on soaking his misery away, that he didn't even hear IP82's maniacal laughter following in his wake.

The next morning, brokenhearted and disillusioned 10dedfish deleted all the files of his would-be masterpiece and formatted his hard drive for good measure. A single tear sneaked out of his eye and slid down his cheek, as he thought about all the stories he could have written, all the things he could have accomplished. Maybe I still could...

"No!" he ruthlessly squashed these thoughts away. IP82 had stated his opinion and it was final. His fate was sealed.

I'm a failure, he whispered to himself with conviction, as he turned his monitor off for the last time and started browsing through leaflets of the French Foreign Legion piled on his desk.

Somewhere far away, IP82's cruel laughter still rang into the night...

    Generalising now are we?

While I am not particularly a 'sissy' I will obviously have to bow down to your superior knowledge of slang and admit to you being right. ::cough-as if-cough::

I am not getting into a discussion about literature, however, I must point out that my reply was only to your post regarding 'Dune' as being:

...which I could not, and can not agree with.

This I have to agree with in part.

80% of fanfiction is pulp fiction, yes, 15% is close to original and at the very least enjoyable, and yet there is at least 5% of fanfiction which, regardless of your opinion, far better than many books on sale now, including those cited as 'bestsellers'.

I have to wonder what it is you've found yourself reading recently.

As for the 'Dune experience', I found it to be below what I was expecting in comparison to what it was when I bought the book. There was no more of an 'experience' about it then there was with about 90% of any fiction out for sale, and believe me, I've read an awful lot.

As for it being something you won't be interested in reading...fine. Don't read it then. It's not as though someone is forcing you to endure such an obvious and lasting torture that is fanfiction which doesn't reach your standards.

I'm quite sure 10dedfish wasn't particularly bothered by your opinion, given how easily he/she agreed with you.

Unfortunately I've come across some writers who have been on the verge of giving up because of people whom they see as being 'older' or 'wiser' than them in a fandom force-feeding them their negative opinions simply because they don't like the subject matter being written.

From your response, I see you really couldn't care less.

Honestly, I'm not particularly angry. There will always be people like you around, regardless. Not that I'm saying you're a particularly bad person, after all, I don't know you.

I just can't help but wonder.

As for the 'Devil reincarnate' line...isn't that just a teensy bit excessive? Or are you just wired that way?

In regards to 'evil' and 'devious', I would have to disagree. More like unsolicitous or perhaps flippant?

    Hahahaha!

I can't believe you're trying to start a flame war over something as stupid as this! I mean, I've pissed people off in debates about religion or homosexualism, but THIS? Getting all flustered and prissy over my opinions about Dune/HP crossovers!? ROFL!

A little advice, Damien. Chose your targets more carefully if you want to survive at DLP. From me, you get rep++ for amusing me to no end with your bloated inflammatory rants about nothing. You're gonna need all the points you can get if you keep posting like this. :)

Lol, Damien. IP, do not utter that name.

    Anyway...
Well, all I have to say to them types of people is, "Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out."

If someone over the internet has that much power over what you do as a writer or anything else, then I dont think they should even be on the net to begin with. That's my view.

It's like these people that want the internet to be 'policed' because someone in a chatroom said 'Fuck' in front of their kids. Too bad, deal with it.

If the person was aiming to be a real, fullblown author, write a novel and all, and couldnt take a little heat from someone over the internet, then I could just imagine what would happen when the critics got onto it.

    Flame war? ::laughs::

Well, I didn't realise just how twitchy you were. Trust me, if I flamed you, you would know it.

To be honest, this is the most fun I've had in a while, and considering I'm using this to wind down, it's not half as vitriolic as it could be, especially if I was extremely upset.

I have my doubts as to what you would consider a flame if you think these posts are in any way related to flaming. Honestly.

Besides which, this is not me being prissy. If you want prissy, I can do prissy, this is just me trying to give my opinion on something which hits on a very recent topic which rather upset me, especially when the youth I was thinking about specifically was not a particularly strong person, and after repeated hounding, he tried to commit suicide.

When a child does that due to an adult's derogatory comments, it's not a laughing matter.

But, as you wish. End. Done. Closed. I leave this thread and will find something else to read.

damn, I just wondered if anyone had seen a hp/dune crossover, Shit. Now, As to the response about my post where I was stereotyped for an inappropriate choice of words (in your opinion), I could really care less. Ok, so it was debate whether the philosophical works of dune could really infringe/enforce the various themes of JRK's work, I chose argument because we were both arguing our case. I will also put right out that I didnt read the 175 lines you posted, because you lost my interest.
I do like to consider myself well read, I have a penchant for the classics and anything from Poe. So, before I say you get a 15 yard penalty for a flagrant violation of the written "2 minute rule" I will stop. You sterotyped and made an assumption, without doing any sort of research. As I have just started posting here, granted, you would not find much, but you could have disclaimed that you were with holding final judgement until you could learn more about me.
And I know when to stop.

Your right of course. This is the first forum Ive posted on in about 3 years, mainly because all of the flames and bullshit got so bad you couldnt ask any questions and the topic would degrade to a three ring mongolian goatfuck.

SO, I understand everyone has thier point of view, I asked my question and apparently no one else has seen one either, so Im good. Thanks everyone who posted.

I havnt even read 'Dune', lol. I've heard a lot about it, though.

I'm not well read. I admit that. I mean, I never really started enjoying reading until I was around 15 years old. Even then, I only did it when I was bored and had nothing else. Now, even if I do have other things I could do, I'd rather read something.

The only fic that I've found that even mentioned anything from Dune was
Harry Potter & the Heir of Ancients in ff.net.
It's your basic SuperHarry fic with a megatrunk and the traditional multi-heir style fic but is slightly better than ok in terms of your average DLP criticism though I do enjoy it once I get past the early, post-OoTP drama. Also the Dune referances come a little later in the chapters, I think.
