Hey so I have a Lenovo Y580 laptop and I have a really odd problem with it that no one else seems to have from my internet research.

Whenever I close the laptop as in physically close the cover and it enters sleep/standby mode it will not power back on no matter what I do for a while. I've tried all the usual things like taking the battery out, opening the back and cleaning components but nothing seems to work. The weird part is that after like a day or two I will hit the power button and it will come back on like nothing was wrong.

The tech support was pretty useless and I'd rather not send my laptop away for a couple weeks, especially so close to class starting but I will if I can't find anything out.

Is the lid magnetized? I seem to recall someone having a problem that was somehow related to the magnet on their latch, though I can't recall if it was a Lenovo.

My instincts say that this could be one of two things:

    1) somehow a significant static charge is created when you close the lid (not from the closing, but by whatever the OS and firmware are trying to do).

    2) both suspend and hibernate are set to kick in upon lid close, and the hibernate is having trouble writing all memory to disk while the OS is suspended.

Problem 1 may be a BIOS setting to change or possibly look into whether the MB is known for bad grounding

Problem 2 is easier- verify the settings that take effect upon initiating standby and disable hibernation if both are triggered by closing the lid. It's worth seeing whether the same effect happens if you use a hot-key combo or the OS to induce sleep/standby.

BTW- if it seems to be hard-locked, you may want to hold down the power key for 12-15 seconds, even though it looks to be powered down.

I currently have a laptop that started to do what you described after my then-two-year-old dumped about 32 fluid ounces of strawberry lemonade on the keyboard (yes, it somehow still works, though the keys are kinda sticky). For some reason I can't boot into Windows, but Linux still works, though when it sleeps or hibernates it doesn't wake up. Unlike you I can get it to restart by taking the battery out, but the slide lock is seized so it takes some real elbow grease and a screwdriver to do that. With both sleep and hibernation disabled and as long as I shut it down it actually works reliably since the fans didn't seize up. I bought a replacement, though, since I only tried to turn it on a couple months later on a whim.

Needless to say, I only buy inexpensive laptops these days, and I finally sprung for Squaretrade's accidental damage protection on this one. :)

Assuming you didn't feel the need to quench your laptop's imaginary thirst, though, I second the static idea. Before the one above I had an aging laptop that my wife used on our old microsuede couch, and in the winter it would get shocked all the time. It started out not being too big a deal, but near the end particularly bad shocks would put it out of commission for a couple hours. Eventually one killed the display and it never turned back on. Closing the lid didn't cause the shocks, though. If you've experienced similar behavior (increasingly bad results from closing your laptop), I hope you either have good warranty coverage or are saving up for a new purchase.
